Job Title: Assistant Retail Manager

Summary of Position:

UGM Thrift Stores specialize in reselling, reusing and recycling slightly used donated clothing, furniture and household items. The Assistant Retail Manager works under the direction of the Retail Manager to carry out all retail operations in the store, including, but not limited to, creating a Christ-centered environment, register operations, customer service, store appearance and displays, and employee interactions, as outlined in the essential functions of the job and in company policies, procedures and mission statement.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Assist the Retail Manager in supervising, Shift Lead, and Retail Staff.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

Key Result Area #1: Culture, Training and Best Practices

  • Assist the Retail Manager daily, in the building of the team, by being an example of “revealing Christ” to all staff, donors, and customers.
  • Assist the Retail Manager in the retail operations of the store, including the handling of cash and credit card payments, non-cash purchases, voids and refunds, in order to ensure the accuracy and security of all transactions.
  • Work with the Retail Manager to establish and maintain customer service standards in order to ensure compliance with the store policies and to provide a pleasant shopping experience for each customer.
  • Help identify areas on the retail floor that need to be addresses related to pulls, merchandising, recovery, etc.
  • Work with retail staff in maintaining the physical appearance of the store, including, but not limited to removing safety hazards, picking up store merchandise and restoring to proper place, to ensure the safety and health of customers and employees.
  • Assist store staff, in stocking store shelves and clothing racks, in order to provide customers with maximum shopping opportunities.
  • Leads the staff to successfully neutralize negative customer interactions.
  • Assist store staff in setting up or changing store displays in order to provide a pleasant shopping environment and to entice customers to shop new areas or items within the store.

 

Key Result Area #2: Administrative Duties

  • Complete Daily Reconciliation Sales Reports, bank deposits, Daily Sales charts, Category Sales chart and Donations charts, and properly save and store all paperwork to ensure truthful reporting and recording of daily sales and donations.
  • Assist the Retail Manager in making daily bank deposits and acquire change for the register to ensure the accuracy and security of all transactions.
  • Work with Retail Manager to train new employees in order to ensure the employees have all essential training needed to be successful in their position.
  • Communicate all events related to customer service issues or problems, register mistakes, employee issues or accidents, and general store operations to the manager, in order to ensure all issues are handled properly and in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Supervise the store operations and staff, in order to ensure compliance with company policies and procedures in the absence of, but under the express direction of the Retail Manager.

 

Key Result Area #3: Environment and Safety

  • Monitor safety issues that may affect employees and customers daily.
  • Ensure that each new employee receives the Safety Orientation for the store.
  • Maintain OSHA and WISHA standards by providing and documenting weekly safety training.
  • Become aware of individual employee needs and accommodate when possible and necessary.

 

Skills & Qualifications

  • Computer literate with a high proficiency using Word, Excel, Outlook; able to complete documents, reports and accurately record information.
  • Excellent communication skills: written, oral, and instructional.
  • Prove to be teachable: organized with the ability to manage multiple projects/tasks at once; able to listen and follow instructions.
  • Prove to be a leader: show ability to listen empathically, respond appropriately in emotional situations, and resolve difficult employee and customer related issues in an understanding way with the goal of maintaining relationships.
  • Prove to be an effective assist manager: show ability to train employees in standard processes and procedures with the goal of being developed into a future Retail Manager.
  • Basic mathematical skills and be able to perform balancing tils and deposits

 

Working Conditions/ Physical Factors:

Occasionally = 1%-33%; Frequently = 34%-66%; Continuously = 67%-100%

  • Work is primarily indoors. It requires climbing stairs, sitting, standing, bending, and reaching - Continuously.
  • Requires a sustained level of high energy, stamina, and the ability to move about the store on a regular and ongoing basis – Continuously.
  • Requires the ability to hear, see, and speak clearly – Continuously.

 

Equipment/ Tools Used:

  • Variety of tools used in the pricing and production process, i.e. pricing guns, steamers, z-racks, clothing racks and displays, forklift, carts, etc.

Wage: $17.86 - $18.57

 
Position Requirements

Education/ Experience:

  • Two or four-year college degree in applicable field of study, or equivalent years of retail experience.
  • 2-3 plus years in the retail industry preferable with Sales experience.
  • Some experience with displaying merchandise and knowledge of retail standards and processes.
