POSITION SUMMARY: BASIC FUNCTION

This position ensures the overall operation of the company's SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) and Controls engineering functions within the needs of the business to meet internal and customer requirements. The role is responsible for enhancing and supporting real-time Critical Infrastructure Networks (CIN) that manage the NTT Global Data Centers Americas (NTT GDCA) systems; this includes systems related to systems controls, data acquisition data storage, and analysis.

Critical to the success of this role is the interactions between, but not limited to, Product Management, Critical Facilities Engineering, Critical Facilities Operations, IT Operations and Engineering, NTT Global Data Centers Engineering and design teams, and customers.

Specifically, as related to this subject domain, this position requires an individual that is forward-looking with a business focused analytical mind, capable of high degrees of collaboration.

The work includes analysis, design, coding, implementation, maintenance and troubleshooting of advanced controls systems and their external interfaces. The Manager is required to lead and coordinate work among internal resources and external contractors, including training and escalation support.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide technical mentoring for junior staff.
  • Provide escalation support as required for controls and automation systems.
  • Provide fill-in support as required for functional equivalents in other divisions and departments.
  • Provide knowledge escalation and training as required for junior staff, peers, and superiors as required.
  • Participate in architecture and standards reviews with senior personnel from other areas
  • Work closely with field Data Center Operations personnel to ensure systems are stable, responsive, and able to support business needs.
  • Work to support company cyber security standards and identify opportunities to improve security.
  • Work to support company safety standards and identify opportunities to improve safety.
  • Advise on the design, programming, construction, and modification of company SCADA controls systems and provide ongoing operational support as requested by Construction and Data Center Operations.
  • Develop training guides and documentation required to on-board new personnel in both design and operational capacities and to ensure business continuity across all SCADA and Controls systems.
  • Develop, document, and operationalize alarming tools and visual aids for field personnel.
  • Develop, document, and operationalize the data collection and HMI control functions to verify and maintain the SCADA data integrity and operational capabilities.
  • May perform, or collaborate in, one or more of the following as required:
    • Prepares project specific work plans, schedules, and budgets for Critical Facilities Engineering resources.
    • Prepares and issues Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for outsourced engineering.
    • Evaluates RFPs, recommends awards, and prepares and facilitates engineering contracts and related documents (PARs, Executive Summaries, Purchase Requests, Purchase Orders, AIA Contracts, and other project documentation).
    • Attends and leads project team meetings.
    • Participates in factory witness testing of new equipment.
    • Conduct engineering calculations and studies
    • Conducts code analysis reviews.
    • Conducts QA/QC reviews.
  • May participate or lead commissioning activities for projects being placed into service
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Pragmatic and practical in problem solving and day-to-day work.
  • First and fore-most, must be business centric, while taking the needs of the customer into consideration.
  • Strong engineering judgment to meet project requirements and objectives and be able to work well with a diverse interdisciplinary team focused on creating and maintain the best Data Center environments possible.
  • Manages stress and/or fast pace effectively.
  • Mus have keen attention to detail with excellent follow-through.
  • In depth knowledge of mechanical system component design, operation, and supporting electrical and network systems: chillers, DX cooling, cooling towers, heat exchangers, pumps, engine-generators, fuel systems, air handling equipment, valves, piping, ductwork, storm and sanitary drains, industrial and domestic water.
  • Thorough knowledge of Mechanical Code requirements and knowledge of related building codes, standards and regulations including ASHRAE, ASME, Life Safety, IBC, NFPA and OSHA.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of electrical systems design and component operation/ monitoring: generators, switchgear, switchboards, UPS, PDU, STS, distribution boards.
  • Skilled to lead and train a group of other engineers and technical professionals, including excellent communication and team building skills.
  • Ability to solve problems by developing creative and innovative solutions to reduce costs with no impact on quality and reliability.
  • Ability to research new designs, technologies, and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities, with skill to incorporate best ideas into RDC designs.
  • Ability to develop and take new design concepts through construction and operation.
  • Familiar with life cycle cost analyses. Ability to develop Total Cost of Ownership reports for procurement analysis.
  • General understanding of Electrical, Civil, Structural and Architectural design.
  • Ability to maintain highly confidential information
  • Ability to manage stress and a fast-paced work environment
  • Excellent verbal and written skills.
  • Proficient with computers to include the utilization of Microsoft programs such as Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or directly related field
  • Minimum 10 years of experience with industrial and commercial mechanical designs (specialized experience in Critical Facilities and other technically sophisticated project types) which includes:
    • Direct experience with the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of data centers.
    • Experience with large scale technical operations.
    • Experience with vendor negotiation and management.
    • Experience with design/build projects.
    • Prior experience with engineering project teams.
    • Experience with construction and operating documentation including drawings, sequences of operations, wire maps, block controls, and IOMs.
 
Position Requirements

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Familiarity with construction sites and hazards and ability to navigate project sites safely.
  • Primarily sitting with some walking, standing, and bending.
  • Use of sight, hearing and voice are required as well as motor skills.
  • Requires ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Able to hear and speak into a telephone.
  • Close visual work on a computer terminal.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate any required to operate computer keyboard and mouse.

WORK CONDITIONS

  • This position is expected to be remote for the foreseeable future with an occasional need to be onsite in a shared workspace.
  • 25%: Construction jobsite at various levels of development.
  • Must be comfortable working in a highly critical, fast paced environment with shifting priorities.
  • Must be able to respond to emergency situations at the data centers.
  • Must be available by phone during assigned work schedule and after hours for emergency situations.
  • Must be willing to work outside normal business hours, including weekends, late nights, holidays, and on-call support.
  • Field work in mechanical and electrical infrastructure rooms, data floor spaces, outdoor and roof mounted equipment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Travel required up to 35% of the time.
  • Must follow safety requirements when working or visiting construction areas.
  • Must possess a current, valid state-issued driver’s license.
