Description

Position Description

CPE's Triage Response Team (TRT) is a vertical that provides technical, programmatic, strategic, and data-driven services to a variety of clients who are invested in conducting analysis or strategic implementation towards redesigning local public safety systems, particularly by centering Black and Brown communities who are most impacted by burdensome policing.

CPE is looking for a qualified candidate to serve as Community Engagement Coordinator of TRT. In this role, this Community Engagement Coordinator will report to the Community Engagement Manager and will support communities' ability to: 1. build broad and effective coalitions of stakeholders; 2. address concerns and achieve legitimacy with key stakeholders in harm reduction and reimagining public safety; 3. understand data and its role in informing strategy and practice for a reduction in racial disparities, and 4. employ best practices for change management.

We seek 1-2 years of demonstrated formal and/or informal social justice advocacy experience and an unwavering commitment to racial equity-- in uplifting Black and Brown communities. This position requires the ability to multitask and provide support on a multitude of community-centered policing initiatives. The TRT Community Engagement Coordinator will conduct outreach in CPE partnership cities, and assist with bespoke community initiatives that support relationships between community, government, and law enforcement in an effort to reduce racial disparity within law enforcement practices, culture, and training.

Key Responsibilities

Community Engagement Coordinators serve as representatives of the Center for Policing Equity when engaging with the community in their official capacity. All community engagement activities shall be aligned with the stated mission, goals, and values of CPE.

At the macro level, this means movement towards a 'just state where racism has been eradicated' and the push for 'just, equitable and non-racist public safety systems'. At the micro-level, this means executing community engagement activities in accordance with the stated objectives of the specific Statement of Work (SOW)/agreement to which they have been assigned. All activities should trackback directly to stated macro and micro objectives, including but not limited to:

  • Identifying organizations and community members who fully represent the demographics impacted by and on the forefront of policing and public safety
  • Identifying and executing inclusive ways to meaningfully engage with and garner mutual trust with community organizations and members
  • Creating a community engagement plan that documents how SOW objectives will be accomplished from a CE perspective
  • Determining KPIs, Definitions of done and Definitions of success
  • Creating a Community Engagement plan and timeline in partnership with the Program Management Office (PMO)
  • Collaborating across the organization to engage the appropriate groups/products/services as necessary to accomplish the objective-aligned CE Plan, with the support of the PMO
  • Serving as a liaison between CPE, LEAs, city government and civic offices, and the community to execute the plan
  • Planning, developing, and managing opportunities/events to hear community voices & gather community input as it relates to the stated objectives
  • Collecting and documenting qualitative community data as input to recommendations and/or to guide CPE engagement as it relates to that community
  • Creating a 'snapshot' or 'picture' of the community landscape, sentiments, issues and status as it relates to public safety and the stated objectives
  • Respectfully, honestly and diplomatically communicating the community perspective/concerns/objectives to both internal and external stakeholders (personally or via community partners)
  • Identifying, communicating, and leading the resolution of any misalignments between CPE objectives and the community's lived experiences/concerns/perspectives
  • Ensuring community transparency into the data gathering processes and activities as they are occurring, and after the completion of analyses so that the community is aware of what data was and was not analyzed and why
  • Ensuring community transparency into the results/recommendations/next steps of the engagement
  • Providing space/opportunities/resources/high-level orchestration for cross-community engagement/expertise/collaboration in accordance with stated objectives
  • Closing the qualitative data gap to ensure qualitative data is consumed by the correct and relevant internal CPE groups/stakeholders
  • Reviewing CPE recommendations/final deliverables with the community prior to submittal to law enforcement agencies to ensure inclusion of community lived experiences/perspectives/voice
  • Assisting with Communications & Policy efforts including but not limited to writing, reviewing, and copyediting resources for external community audiences
  • Leveraging internal CPE tools to document and provide internal transparency to Community Engagement Work via Cityscape, Asana, Salesforce, and externally via qualitative data collection tools

Qualifications

  • Passionate commitment to economic, environmental, gender, social and racial justice issues
  • Interest in or experience working with education, government, justice, religious and youth organizations and/or individuals
  • (An added bonus) bilingual or multilingual
  • Candidates with backgrounds in communications, community development, advocacy or policy strongly encouraged to apply

Requirements

  • 1-2 years of demonstrated formal and/or informal social justice advocacy experience
  • Ability to travel and work flexible hours (about 25% travel)
    • All duties can be done virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Advanced communication skills. Ability to present to and communicate with internal CPE stakeholders, groups, and Senior Leadership as well as communicate across diverse community members, community organizations, and government and law enforcement agencies
  • Ability to own and organize individual tasks while managing and prioritizing multiple efforts
  • Ability and desire to work both individually and in a team setting (collaboratively)
