POSITION SUMMARY
Patient Transporter’s functions include positioning, transferring, and transporting patients to and from various departments or locations by wheelchair, bed, or gurney. This involves lifting, turning, and repositioning patients requiring moderate to total assistance. Transporter may also perform teaching and training functions, dispatching functions, and limited clerical duties for the transport function. Other role requirements include supply delivery, equipment movement and maintenance and cleaning or disinfection, assisting with the department dispatcher as required, assisting in the management of decedent affairs, and other activities as directed. Assignments may vary between day and night shift, and participation in weekend coverage may be required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Responsible for providing direct observation of patients as directed by the nursing plan of care and under the supervision of the nursing staff and/or nursing department supervisor. Responsible for assisting nursing staff to create, maintain and provide a safe environment.
- Transport patients by assisting patients in and out of transport cars, ambulances, helicopters; lifting patients on and off beds; moving them to and from special service and treatment areas, and operating rooms; using wheelchairs or moveable beds.
- Comfort patients and their families offering support and encouragement; being punctual and attentive to procedures schedules; demonstrating caring and cultural sensitivity.
- Reports changes in the patient to others for follow up.
- Cares for patients by assisting them to restrooms, providing bedpans, blankets, etc.
- Removes soiled linen and replenishes clean linen.
- Attends holding areas as requested.
- Assists patients and family members by responding to inquiries and providing information based on departmental and organizational policy.
- Performs related duties such as reporting equipment malfunctions, assisting others, cleans work areas, and transportation equipment, etc.
- Demonstrates standard of performance (ownership teamwork, communication, compassion) that support patient satisfaction and principles of service excellence.
- Transport equipment and supplies by picking-up specimens and delivering to specified laboratory.
- Transports deceased patients by following protocols and delivering them to the mortuary.
- Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with federal regulations and Joint Commission requirements.

- Assists and supports ordering, stocking, usage and maintenance of supplies and equipment
- Ensure Proper PPE is always used while on duty. Face surgical mask is to be worn in all hospital areas. Proper handwashing is required. If water is not available use hand sanitizer. Social distancing will be practiced by department.
- Proper PPE is used inside assigned Clinics or Unit. NIOSH-approved N95 mask filtering face piece respirator or higher, is available, this included eye or face masks shield, gloves, and isolation gown.
- Complete all donning and doffing tasks in a safe acceptable method and discard of used PPE accordingly. Complete provided training.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical:
This position is very active and requires strength to help lift patients or move objects and patients weighing over 100 pounds. A transporter must have the stamina to be on their feet all the day which includes standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crawling, sitting, talking or hearing, crouching, use of hands to finger, handle, feel, and reach with hands and arms. Must be able to taste and/or smell This position may require long hours and weekend coverage when assigned. Position requires the incumbent to utilize vision requirements: close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to focus as needed. This position requires the ability to do repetitive motion actions with bilateral feet at times; and, bilateral hands especially in grasping simple/ light; grasping firm/heavy; and, fine dexterity. This position requires the ability to hear alarms on equipment, client calls, instructions from physician/department staff; and, overhead pages over a loudspeaker.
Mental:
The transporter must be able to prioritize and use good judgement and must also be able to coordinate a variety of issues while being frequently interrupted. A transporter must communicate effectively and with tact in stressful situations. The incumbent must have the ability to do the following for prolonged periods of time: cope with high level of stress; adapt to shift work; and, work in areas that are close and crowded. Must be able to frequently make decisions under high pressure; cope with anger/fear/hostility of others in a calm way; concentrate; handle a high degree of flexibility; handle multiple priorities in a stressful situation; and, demonstrate high degree of patience. Incumbent must be able to occasionally manage altercations and work alone.
Environmental:
Incumbent may be exposed to prolonged periods of infectious diseases. The incumbent may also be occasional required to work in exposure to the following environmental condition: wet, humid conditions(non-weather); work near moving mechanical parts; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold (non-weather); extreme heat (non-weather); risk of electrical shock; risk of radiation; and, vibration. This job requires extensive exposure to environmental fumes or airborne particles. The typical noise level is moderate.
