Inclusion Specialist

Works with the caregivers to adapt the learning environment and activities in order to
increase the participation of children with diagnosed disabilities and/or special needs.

1. Creates community awareness of inclusive child care through trainings and workshops
for parents and child care providers.
2. Identifies needs by providing a variety of primary and secondary screenings for school
readiness children enrolled in child care programs and family child care homes.
3. Works with caregivers to provide an inclusive learning environment for children with
diagnosed disabilities and/or special needs.
4. Develops a Child Development Plan for parents and care givers with goals to
implement strategies for individual children with diagnosed disabilities and/or special
5. Models strategies for inclusion in the classroom and family child care home providers.
6. Provides professional development and support to caregivers in order to increase their
confidence and competence in working with children with diagnosed disabilities
and/or special needs.
7. Observes children at request of parents or providers and makes referrals for services or
further evaluation when appropriate.
8. Identifies children who are at risk due to behavior concerns and develops a plan with
the teacher to support their social and emotional development.
9. Keeps informed of current professional knowledge and strategies for inclusion through
participation in workshops, and by reading professional publications.
10. Provides a minimum of 2 trainings per quarter.
11. Utilizes state and agency databases to track school readiness children.
12. Maintain confidentiality in regards to information accessed in the performance of job
13. Prepares and maintains child files complete with case notes.
14. Follow OEL guidelines by submitting required reports, attending required meetings
and/or conference calls.

  • This position reports to the Director of School Readiness.
Position Requirements


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education, Psychology, Early Childhood Education, Social Work or related field
  • 3-5 yrs experience working in preschool settings with special needs children preferred.

(A comparable amount of training, education, or experience can be substituted for minimum qualifications.)


  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to maintain a strong commitment to the needs of children and project goals
  • Knowledge of early childhood performance standards
  • Ability to build and establish mentoring relationships
  • Ability to work independently with little direct supervision
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products, i.e., Word, Excel
  • Ability to work with database products


  • Valid driver’s license and proof of automobile coverage
  • Satisfactory Driving Record (as outlined in Vehicle Driving Policy)
  • Must be CLASS certified within 1 year of start date and maintain reliability for CLASS assessments.
  • Certificates of acknowledgment required: Conflict of Interest, Code of Ethics,
  • Confidentiality agreements, IT Systems and Security, Anti-Fraud, HR Employee
  • Acknowledgment Form.


  • Works in an early childhood classroom setting
  • Local travel to multiple sites is required
  • Some out of town travel, including nights and weekends required


  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction)
  • Acceptable hearing (with or without correction)
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
