GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Ensure that the Disabilities Head Start performance standards are met in Head Start and Early Head Start.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Establish and implement the disabilities service plan.

2. Track/monitor activities contained in the disabilities service plan.

3. Develop and implement recruitment strategies that promote enrollment of children with disabilities.

4. Arrange for formal evaluation of a child who after the initial screening has been identified as possibly having a disability.

5. Collaborate with staff to meet the special needs of children with disabilities which include education, health, nutrition, social services, and parent involvement.

6. Support staff and parents in individualizing the child development and education approach for children with disabilities.

7. Monitor services provided under the IFSPs and IEPs.

8. Secure contracts with the LEAs.

9. Collaborate with staff and parents to develop Individual Classroom Plans based on the child’s IFSPs and IEPs.

10. Creates ICP to interpret IEP/IFSP for teachers and education staff.

11. Communicates monthly with Center Manager and Coaching Staff about the status of children with IEP/IFSP's.

12. Attend staffing meetings as needed/requested.

13. Participate in case management meetings as required.

14. Coordinate and/or conduct training for staff and families on topics related to special needs.

15. Provide education and/or information for families on how to advocate for their child.

16. Coordinate activities and/or strategies to support successful transitions of children with disabilities to and from Head Start/Early Head Start.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP:

· This position reports to the Health Services Manager.

 
Position Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

· Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education, Psychology, or related field

· 1-3 yrs related work experience preferred

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

· Knowledge of effective methods to improve a child’s emotional stability

· Knowledge of securing & individualizing needed services for children with disabilities.

· Ability to build and maintain good human relations with staff and parents.

· Ability to work with the public in a tactful and diplomatic manner

· Ability to perform tasks with little direct supervision

· Ability to exercise good judgment and emotional maturity

· Commitment to strengthen families but with ultimate commitment to the well being of the child

· Knowledge of applicable safety and abuse-reporting procedures

· Knowledge of Microsoft Office products at an intermediate to advanced level

· Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing

· Ability to maintain confidential information

· Ability to plan and organize work as well as maintain records and prepare reports

· Ability to multi-task, prioritize and work in fast-paced environment

CERTIFICATIONS:

· Valid driver’s license and proof of automobile coverage

· Satisfactory Driving Record (as outlined in Vehicle Driving Policy)

· By October 2019, must have current First Aid and Pediatric Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training

· Complete a minimum of 15 hours of in-service training annually, July 1- June 30

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

· Works in early childhood classrooms and office settings

· Local travel to multiple sites is required

· Minimal night, weekend or out-of-town work possible

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS:

· Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction)

· Acceptable hearing (with or without correction)

· Ability to communicate both orally and in writing

· Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
