About the Organization Easterseals Louisiana (ESL) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to change the way the world defines and views disabilities by making profound, positive differences in people's lives everyday. Established in 1951, our organization supports over 8,600 individuals (whom we refer to as Participants) with a variety of disabilities. A leading provider of disability services, ESL has physical locations in 8 regions of Louisiana and our array of programs include; support coordination (case management) for children, adults and elderly participants, a wide range of behavioral health and housing services, early intervention services for infants and toddlers, and a school setting called The Chartwell Center in New Orleans.

Because we support so many participants with a range of needs, we have learned that disability looks different for everyone, and it is our goal to help our participants thrive and live their lives to their fullest potential. Description

Mission & Vision:

The purpose of Chartwell Center is to aid individuals with autism spectrum and related disorders by providing educational services and therapy, and by offering training and support to parents, teacher, and other professionals. Founded in 1999 by concerned and dedicated parents, the school’s goal is to help its students not only survive but thrive in the outside world. The Chartwell Center became a part of Easterseals Louisiana in 2022. Easterseals Louisiana is a non-profit organization whose mission is to assist children and adults with physical and intellectual disabilities achieve independence. It is our vision to be recognized as an organization that transforms communities and engages all members through quality service, knowledge, and compassion.

Job Description (include, but are not limited to):

The aim of the Life Skills Mentor is to bring individuals served by the program to their highest potential. Mentors teach communication skills, social skills, vocational skills and overall life skills to young adults on the autism spectrum. This is accomplished by applying “best practice” methods and techniques to the learning process. We utilize a team approach that includes the individual, the family, the director, the mentors who work with the individual, employers/co-workers, and consultations with therapists and other experts.

Student Responsibilities:

  • Engage with adults on the autism spectrum in a way that promotes dignity and improved quality of life
  • Actively participate in professional development and extracurricular activities
  • Proactively manage student behavior according to shared expectations of the program director
  • Prepare lesson plans 
  • Lead activities including yoga, gardening, art projects, and daily walks
  • Provide assistance and training to adults on the autism spectrum with meals, hygiene, activities
  • Create a fun learning environment 

SchoolResponsibilities:

  • Model the school’s values and core beliefs
  • Set and work toward ambitious behavioral and vocational goals
  • Use feedback from supervision to improve mentorship practices
  • Meet weekly with team members to discuss current plans, barriers to progress, and potential solutions for increasing progress and guaranteeing treatment integrity
  • Deliver community-based instruction and workplace oversight
  • Collect and use observational data
  • Engage families and community members in the learning process
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to implement and reinforce all components of a consistently positive, creative and solutions-oriented school culture

Position Details:

  • Can lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Communication with student, staff and family is essential.
  • Duties will include assisting with daily living skills such as dressing, hygiene, and toileting.
 
Position Requirements

Qualifications:

  • A commitment to fulfill the school’s mission and vision
  • A passion for helping children and adults with learning differences
  • Experience working with children and/or adults with autism
  • Familiarity with Applied Behavior Analysis
  • The desire to be part of a true Professional Learning Community
  • Flexibility, patience, perception and empathy
  • A “Can-Do” attitude
  • Show respect and courtesy to students, parents, and colleagues
  • Accept feedback from supervisors in a polite and constructive manner
  • Communicate effectively to students, parents, and colleagues
  • Maintain confidential information about students and their families
  • Act as a positive role model and representative of Chartwell both at Chartwell and in the community
  • A strong desire to increase instructional efficacy by receiving and implementing feedback
  • An unwavering commitment to help each of our young learners excel behaviorally, academically, emotionally and socially

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree; preferred but not mandatory in Human or Social Services
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Easterseals Louisiana is a Drug-Free Workplace, pre-employment and random drug tests will be administered.
  • Will be required to pass Easterseals Louisiana’s background check
  • Some experience working with children or adults for 1 year in a 1:1 or group setting
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Personal means of transportation with a reliable vehicle

Salary: $26,000 anually
