Location: Remote

Reports to: VP & General Counsel

 

Responsibilities:

  • Advise HR professionals and business managers regarding employment-related matters under US federal, state, and local laws (g., compliance with Title VII, ADAAA, FLSA, FMLA and state/local sick leave laws, FCRA, multistate drug testing issues; enforcement of restrictive covenants, etc.) and, with outside counsel, international laws and regulations.
  • Advise HR professionals on emerging legislative and regulatory changes affecting employment and labor obligations
  • Review and revise internal policies and procedures to ensure multi-jurisdictional regulatory compliance
  • Partner with HR and Compliance to develop and deliver proactive training to business leaders on a wide variety of employment law matters
  • Provide legal representation and/or oversee outside counsel regarding agency administrative charges, audits, and investigations (e.g., EEOC, DOL, OSHA and state/local agencies)
  • Respond to attorney letters, complaints and claims involving employment and labor related concerns
  • Supervise outside counsel with respect to employment (and, in some instances, non-employment) litigation matters
  • Advise HR and assist negotiating employment-related documents including separation agreements and restrictive covenants
  • Partner with investigations counsel and/or HR or ethics and compliance to ensure internal investigations are completed in an empathetic, fair, neutral, through and timely manner
  • Participate in M&A due diligence in support of the HR teams, providing perspectives and guidance.
  • Support HR professionals on compensation, benefits, ERISA and immigration matters

Qualifications

  • Strong ability to manage a diverse range of legal projects and multi-task
  • Proven ability to make good judgments and quick decisions and the ability to devise and implement creative solutions
  • Strong communication skills to work with executive management, staff and other professionals
  • Superior writing, analytical, negotiating, and communication skills
  • Ability to handle confidential information and material with the highest degree of discretion and professional responsibility
  • Ability to work under pressure, handle multiple competing priorities and provide practical legal advice
  • J.D. degree from an accredited law school with superior academic credentials
  • 8-12 Years' experience: 4+ years’ experience as a practicing lawyer, preferably initially with a prominent national law firm before moving to an in-house position, and 4+ years of legal practical experience with an in-house legal department
  • Familiarity with the US cannabis industry a plus
  • Subject to background check per state cannabis regulations

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A mix of law firm and in-house experience is preferred.
  • Substantial experience in a broad range of employment and labor legal matters
  • Comfortable working in a global environment on projects involving professionals from around the world
  • Ability to direct and manage activities of, and relationships with, outside counsel
  • Vision and experience in strategic initiatives beyond tactical implementation

  • Ability to balance legal and business needs, assessing appropriate risk to make tough decisions

  • Ability to prioritize and work simultaneously on multiple projects and ability to organize and analyze complex information and data
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and analytical skills, to work with all levels within the organization and have executive-level presence to interact with regional business leadership
  • Successful experience collaborating in a matrix across organizational and cultural boundaries
  • Desire to drive personal performance through coaching, feedback, and ongoing development
