Easterseals UCP provides meaningful and exceptional services so that children, adults, and families living with disabilities and/or mental health challenges can live, learn, work, and play in their community. 

For 64 transformative summers, Camp Easterseals UCP has provided quality recreational and therapeutic camp programming in the beautiful countryside of New Castle, Virginia. There, children and adults with disabilities are able to experience all the outdoors has to offer including horseback riding, canoeing, swimming, arts and crafts, ziplining and campfires thanks to an amazing group of dedicated team members.

Camp Easterseals is seeking dynamic, people-oriented counselors to join the team this summer. If you are seeking not only a job opportunity, but also a purpose, we have the position for you.     

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Camp Counselor is responsible for the care and supervision of an assigned camper or campers. The purpose of this role is to assist campers with varying developmental needs to participate in camp activities including nature walks, arts and crafts, adapted sports activities and fun on the water. This includes helping to maintain a positive, clean and safe environment for all.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Attend and actively participate in all staff orientation programming as well as ongoing staff and cabin meetings.
  • Learn about the likes/dislikes of your assigned camper(s) and any physical/emotional supports and strategies needed to help them thrive at camp.
  • Supervise and assist campers with daily activities as needed, including transferring, bathing, feeding, dressing, and other tasks.
  • Encourage participation in camp activities and assist as needed.
  • Supervise cabin during rest and night duty when scheduled.
  • Assist in daily and weekly cabin and camp clean-ups.
  • Show and encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment,
  • and facilities.
  • Set an example for campers and others through cleanliness,
  • punctuality, sharing, sportsmanship, and other appropriate behaviors.
  • Maintain a positive and enthusiastic attitude.
  • Fulfill assigned roles in enforcing safety regulations and emergency
  • Procedures.
  • Maintain all camper paperwork as assigned

Position Requirements

WHAT WE REQUIRE:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age; high school diploma or GED required. One year of college preferred. 
  • CPR and first aid training preferred.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and clean driving record preferred.
  • The ability and willingness to work 12 consecutive days.
  • The physical ability to assist in transferring campers in and out of wheelchairs, push wheelchairs and to assist in other activities of daily living.
  • Enthusiasm, creativity and a sense of humor.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with a diverse group of campers and staff
  • The ability to identify and respond to potential environmental risks related to daily camp activities.
