JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for teaching top quality swim lessons. WSIs provide a safe, welcoming learning environment, and they teach appropriate skills through a variety of activities. They perform their duties under the supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Teach swim lessons to participants using the YWCA/Red Cross learn-to-swim program.
  • Plan weekly classes to maximize use of participants’ time in the pool.
  • Continually evaluate participant swimming progress to adjust lesson plans to meet their needs, and to accurately report their progress at the end of the session.
  • Prepare progress cards for each child participant for the last day in order to give accurate feedback and appropriate level recommendation for continuation.
  • Maintain the safety of all participants at all times through the use of safe equipment, safe spaces, and safe group management.
  • Give participants accurate, positive, corrective feedback so they can improve their skills.
  • Maintain communication with lead WSI regarding swimmer progress, parent concerns, issues that may arise.

 

RELATIONSHIPS:

This position reports to the Aquatics Coordinator, who reports to the General Manager. Critical relationships will include participants and their accompanying adults, fellow Aquatics staff (WSIs, aides, lifeguards, head lifeguards, coaches). The incumbent will interact with YWCA patrons, participants and their parents, and staff members from G&Y and ECE.

 

 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Ability to perform physical skills and techniques as required by certification on demand; equivalent of passing Red Cross Learn-to-Swim level 4.
  • Current Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification, or equivalent in experience and education.
  • Must have excellent customer service skills to respond to participant/parent concerns.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills to plan classes and record progress each class.

Preferred:

  • High school diploma/General Education Degree.
  • One year experience teaching or aiding swim lessons.
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.
  • Cultural competency to effectively communicate with and build relationships with participants/parents.
  • Bilingual language in Spanish, Somali, Hmong or Arabic - receive a $1 differential pay increase

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to lift/support students as needed.
  • Required to be in the pool for extended periods of time. Indoor pool - warm, humid and noisy.
  • Must be able to perform required swimming skills to assigned class.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

 

COMPENSATION: Starting at 16.25 per hour
