JOB SUMMARY:
This year-round, part-time position provides direct service to participants in the Beacons Learning Center at Franklin Middle School. Beacons provides afterschool academic and enrichment opportunities to 6th-8th grade students.

This person will have the opportunity to chaperone a small group of youth on two, week-long Surival Camp field trips at the Minnesota Zoo!

Hours

Summer: 30-40 hrs/wk Monday - Thursday | 8:30am-4:30pm 

School Year: 10-15 hrs/wk Monday - Thursday | 2:45pm-5:45pm

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Implement comprehensive programming:

  • Recruit and maintain program participants 
  • Plan, prepare, and facilitate/co-facilitate age appropriate and culturally sensitive educational activities utilizing and/or creating Girls and Youth curriculum
  • Create and maintain a safe learning environment that is student-centered, mission-focused, and accessible to a diverse student body
  • Support communication with participants and families, and organize and support retention efforts to maintain participants

Administration

  • Collect registration forms, participant demographic information, and track program attendance
  • Deliver and obtain program evaluation information from participants for program quality assurance and reporting purposes
  • Maintain the online data management system with a commitment to accuracy and regularity

Seek continuous professional development

  • Attend and participate in departmental and program team meetings
  • Participate in educational activities and trainings to improve achievement of program goals
  • Keep up-to-date on current youth and program-related trends

 

RELATIONSHIPS:

This position reports to the Beacons Program Coordinator, who reports to the Girls and Youth Director. The incumbent will interact with Girls and Youth staff, Minneapolis Public Schools contacts and Community Organization contacts. Critical relationships will include program participants and families.   

 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Minimum of two years college or equivalent, and one year of experience working with youth from low-income and inner city families
  • One year of experience planning and facilitating effective, structured groups
  • Strong oral, written and presentation skills
  • Ability to facilitate and teach comprehensive groups 
  • Ability to carry out duties independently, as well as in a team setting
  • Ability to work with a variety of cultures, backgrounds and perspectives
  • Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)
  • Possess current CPR and First Aid certification, or successfully obtain within 90 days of hire
  • Strong belief in YWCA and ability to convey its importance

Preferred:

  • Bilingual skills in Spanish, Somali, or Hmong
  • Experience in youth programming related to adolescent development
  • Experience with data entry in online data management systems

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • The ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Must be able to travel to various YWCA Minneapolis, Minneapolis Public Schools, and community sites

 

COMPENSATION: The pay range for this position is $15.50-$17.00 per hour (depending on qualifications)

 

PERK: FREE YWCA Minneapolis Health & Wellness Membership to all three of our sites plus $4 monthly rate for each household members. 

Note: YWCA Minneapolis is a qualified employer under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF)
