ABS Marketing Specialist 


Role Accountability

In order to achieve this state of success, this position will provide benefits marketing support and analysis for existing & prospective ABS clients as it relates to ABS services and products to include, but not limited to, evaluating products and programs, analyzing benefit design and structure, negotiating product pricing and terms, and full implementation of selected products/programs with carrier & vendor partners. This position will primarily work on employer group accounts with 50+ employee lives, but may be asked to assist with a smaller market segment as the need arises throughout the year.


Nature & Scope:

Benefits Marketing Specialists function as research analysts and have their finger on the pulse of what sells around the region in which the firm operates, analyzing demographic data, buying and shopping habits, product design & performance, looking at a competitors and their pricing, creating and administering surveys, questionnaires and other information gathering devices, and measuring current strategies all in an effort to help expertly understand the best way to market products to prospective and current clients & assist in generating revenue. This individual needs a strong base of employee benefit marketing skills, industry knowledge and carrier relationships. Applicants must be efficient, able to prioritize, honest, ethical, have the ability to work independently and be a quick learner.

Specific Accountabilities:

  • Prepare Request for Proposals (RFP) for market evaluation.
  • Work with various insurance carriers & vendor partners to identify most competitive benefit plan options.
  • Analyze market results and prepare proposals for agent presentation.
  • Prepare sold products for submission/implementation.
  • Develop and maintain working relationship with the various insurance company sales/renewal representatives and underwriters.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the various carriers’ plans and programs.
  • Develop and maintain strong technical knowledge of employee benefit lines of coverage and ratings.
  • Consistently perform clerical functions including, but not limited to scanning & electronically filing documents, proofreading and photocopying documents.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the benefits market, including new and renewal business, rate and quote employee benefit lines.
  • Analytical Skills: Benefits Marketing specialists look at many streams of data to determine the demographics and buying trends of current and potential customers. Understanding this data will be critical to the job.
  • Communication: Educating our clients and prospects regarding product advantages/disadvantages so that clients/prospects make sound choices requires a strong ability to speak and listen well.
  • Critical-Thinking: Being able to process the data so that ABS creates and communicates an effective strategy for a client or prospect.
  • Attention to Detail: Analyzing data, preparing product & pricing comparisons, cost modeling for employers and employees. Heavy focus on mathematics and calculations; accuracy & attention to detail are imperative.
  • Knowledgeable in Health & Life insurance coverages, insurance agency management systems, & other software used.
  • Working knowledge/understanding of employee benefits, health plan implementation, benefits administration, and practical experience in regulatory issues (ERISA, COBRA, HIPAA, both state & federal regulations specific to health insurance nationwide).
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both written and oral.
  • Proficient in web-based technology, including Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
  • Must be willing to obtain insurance licenses; already possessing a Life/Health & Accident license is preferred.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma
  • Experience in Employee Benefits agency or insurance carrier
  • 2 years working in a similar position within an employee benefits insurance agency, insurance carrier or a Human Resources department preferred
  • Life/Health & Accident License preferred
  • Medicare & Long Term Care License preferred
