Holland Bloorview’s Indigenous Summer Student Research program provides a unique interdisciplinary research experience. Students will have opportunities to work with their supervisor on a research project, attend our Lunch ‘n’ Learns and present their research at the annual Ward Summer Student Research Day. This program is for students of Indigenous ancestry.
Holland Bloorview acknowledges its presence on the traditional territory of many Indigenous Nations. The area known as Tkaronto has been under the care of the Anishinabek Nation, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, and the Huron-Wendat. It is now home to many First Nation, Inuit and Métis communities. We acknowledge the current treaty holders, the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. This territory is subject of the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement to peaceably share and care for the Great Lakes region. Holland Bloorview specifically sits on land of Treaty #13, the Toronto Purchase, of 1805. In 2010, the Canadian government paid a settlement for the Toronto Purchase Claim to rectify the unreasonable sum of the original purchase and the appropriation of more lands than agreed upon.
We are honoured to introduce the Indigenous Summer Student Research program at Holland Bloorview. Students will be afforded space to perform ceremonies and can leave work to attend off-site ceremonies with prior notification of their supervisor. Students will be paired with a peer mentor throughout the summer. Students will also have periodic opportunities to dialogue with the Vice President of Research.
The supervising scientist, peer mentor and graduate student/research staff/post-doc (if relevant) taking part in this stream of the Ward Summer Student program will all have completed Indigenous cultural safety training.
The summer internship will be a combination of in-person and virtual attendance, as feasible.
The Indigenous Summer Student Research program is part of Holland Bloorview’s broader institutional strategy for inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility.
Compensation Details
The program runs for 12 weeks from May 2, 2022 – July 22, 2022. Students will be paid $15.00 per hour based on a 37.5 hour week (full-time), less statutory deductions, including 4% in lieu of vacation and relevant statutory holiday pay. Students will be paid biweekly through payroll.

Dr. Kushki develops novel pattern recognition and machine learning techniques for analysis of biological and behavioural data in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and designs technologies that improve the quality of life and care for children with ASD.

Dr. Darcy Fehlings (CP Lab)
Dr. Fehlings innovates and evaluates neurorehabilitation treatments for children and youth with cerebral palsy. She is also leads the Cerebral Palsy Discovery Lab.

Dr. Deryk Beal (CONNECT Lab)
Dr. Deryk Beal specializes in the study of paediatric brain development and its disorders and is the principal investigator leading the CONNECT Lab. His research program aims to understand the neurobiology of developmental diversity and to innovate and evaluate new treatments for childhood brain-based disorders such as autism spectrum disorder, brain injury due to stroke or trauma, spinal cord injury and persistent pain.

Dr. Elaine Biddiss
Dr. Biddiss designs innovative technologies that create possibilities for young people with disabilities to participate more enjoyably and effectively in arts, music, physical activities and therapies.

Dr. Evdokia Anagnostou (Autism Research Centre)
Dr. Anagnostou’s research focuses on improving outcomes and quality of life for children with autism spectrum disorders and their families. She is the co-lead of the Autism Research Centre at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital with Dr. Jessica Brian.

Dr. Tim Ross (EPIC Lab)
Dr. Ross explores experiences of disability and ways to advance more accessible, inclusive, and diverse communities. This research is focused on four topics: (1) education access, (2) transportation and mobility, (3) inclusive play, and (4) institutional ableism.
