Virginia’s largest vineyard with more than 200 acres of French vinifera varieties for still and sparkling wines is seeking a Vineyard Manager.
Trump Winery is located in the heart of the Monticello American Viticultural Area and part of the Monticello Wine Trail produces roughly 40,000 cases of wine per year. We are Virginia’s largest Vineyard making up roughly 6% of Virginia’s acreage of agriculture. Growing 12 varietals of grapes including Chardonnay, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Pinot Noir, Malbec, Semillon, Pinot Meunier, and Carmenere and currently producing 14 wines in our red, white, and sparkling wine programs.
The Vineyard Manager will play a key role in the continued refinement of our vineyard farming practices. This position will work with the winemaker in growing premium wine grapes through data collection, analysis, logistical support, as well as assist in day to day operations and labor management.
This is a full-time, year-round position. Compensation package to include employee housing if desired.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Create annual farm plan related to pruning and redevelopment strategies, canopy management techniques and timing, and soil fertility
- Perform vineyard observations including pest and disease scouting, crop health, and efficiency
- Maintain the chemical spray program including health and safety compliance and training, record keeping, proper chemical selection and purchasing, and adherence to spray intervals and worker reentry
- Manage and oversee annual fruit sales including pricing, contracts, deposit, scheduling, and payment
- Monitor the department's budget and obtain approval from management when additional spending is necessary
- Manage and oversee compliance with vineyard H-2A labor program
- Verify accurate payroll records, submitting time sheets in a timely fashion on payroll processing days
- Create, train, and follow safe operating procedures; safeguard personal safety, company property, environmental and team member’s safety
- Ensure understanding of and enforce all company policies with employees; submit all HR paperwork in a timely fashion for employee file
- Develop and implement applicable training programs for department and help to create and update SOPs when necessary
- Participate in continuing education programs and research within the industry to enhance expertise
REQUIREMENTS:
- Degree in Viticulture or related Agricultural Science required
- 5+ years viticulture experience, preferably in environments managing a minimum of 50 acres of wine grapes including hands on vineyard management and team development
- 3+ years experience in supervisor role
- Hands on experience planting new vineyards including clone, root stock, and site selection
- Capable of standing for 8 hours per day or more; Able to push, pull, carry, and lift up to 70 pounds. Frequently bends over, kneels, twists, reaches over head, climbs stairs, ladders, and walks varied surfaces (paved, incline, uneven, etc).
- Conversational Spanish required
- Pesticide Applicators License desired
- Valid Driver’s required (without restrictions)
