Temporary position until September 2023.   Opportunities Available   Category Counselling   Open Date 12/21/2021   Close Date 1/7/2022   Description The Counsellor provides counselling, case management, crisis intervention, support , advocacy and outreach to clients of Carlington and participates in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of counselling services. This work is done within the scope of practice mandated by the relevant professional college. Program-Related Activities Engages in short-term assessment, counseling, referral and advocacy activities with clients referred by Carlington staff and other area workers. Acts as a resource to and advocate for individuals, groups and the community. Ensures the development of and facilitates or co-facilitates groups for target populations, as necessary. Provides risk assessment, personal and practical support, information, referral and advocacy with individuals. Assesses client status by gaining an understanding of social determinants of health. Acts as a client advocate on individual and systemic issues. Contributes to chart documentation, participates in chart reviews and case conferences, and makes referrals. Participates in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of treatment, education, counselling and health promotion programs and services for individuals, families and the community. Acts as a consultant on resources for other service providers in the Centre and in the community. Liaises and collaborates with staff and other community service providers as appropriate to provide service and make referrals Provides relief for crisis intake as needed.   Position Requirements Education Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in a relevant discipline or equivalent combination of some post-secondary education and significant experience in counselling. Eligible for membership in an appropriate professional regulatory body (College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario or Ontario College of Social Workers & Social Service Workers). Professional experience Three to five years full-time relevant experience in a community setting. Experience in providing community-based mental health and counselling services including crisis intervention, group work, referral, and advocacy. Experience with counselling techniques such as cognitive behavioural therapy, narrative therapy, feminist therapy, motivational interviewing or solution-focused therapy and strength based practices preferred. Experience in group education and knowledge of adult learning principles and experience in facilitating groups. Experience and interest in working with marginalized and diverse clientele, such as low-income, high-needs, newcomer, and a variety of multicultural communities. Experience in health promotion including community development. Experience in program development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. Experience in a non-profit, community-based organization. Key Competencies Thorough knowledge of and proficiency in current assessment, counselling, and intervention techniques. Thorough knowledge and understanding of community resources and community-based health care, as well as issues affecting women and people affected by mental illness. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written. Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment. Knowledge of and experience with group dynamics and group facilitation approaches Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computers and various software applications, including Microsoft Office programs, client database software, and electronic record keeping in a client services setting. Linguistic Profile This position falls within Carlington CHC’s designation under the French Language Services Act of Ontario. Fluency in English is required. Fluency in French is required at Level (Advanced +) for oral expression/comprehension and Level (Intermediate +) for written expression.
