Camp Counselor/First Aider, Joseph Conrad Overnight Sailing Camp

Mystic Seaport Museum is seeking a Camp Counselor/First Aider for our Overnight and Day Summer Sailing Camps.  During this residential summer program campers and staff sleep aboard a historic full-rigged ship, the Joseph Conrad, learn to sail Dyer Dhows, and participate in fun activities in the evenings, including a Planetarium show, climbing the rigging, and more.  This position is responsible for assisting in the day-to-day camp operation including supervising campers ages 8-15 on Dyer Dhow sailboats, supervising Counselors-in-Training, and implementing evening activities. This position is also responsible for overseeing all medication and medication administration for campers.  The position requires great leadership and organizational skills; the ability to work well with children; the ability to assist the Director in supervising, training, and mentoring staff; communication with campers' parents; and excellent teamwork skills.  Room and board included, meals provided while camp is in session.  The first aid director works Sunday-Friday as part of the camp staff which includes significant blocks of time off every day. A willingness to work a flexible schedule according to the needs of the camp is essential. One full weekend off during the summer is guaranteed

Responsibilities:

  • Lead by example as a role model who sets the tone for positive youth development
  • Organizes and oversees all medication for campers each week
  • Administers first aid and dispenses prescribed medications on a daily basis
  • Maintains first aid supplies and logbook
  • Keeps accurate records, in particular the heath records for all staff, volunteers, leaders, and trainees
  • Communicates with parents in a timely fashion as needed
  • Assists in day-to-day responsibilities of a residential camp
  • Assist with camp activities
  • Create lesson plans activities
  • Help create and carry out the Apprentice Program: an in-depth week long study for campers interested in Marlinspike Seamanship, Art, Marine Science, Astronomy, or other interest areas
  • Participate with activities, lead transition times and supervise campers
  • Adhere to all camp safety guidelines
  • Participate in basic equipment maintenance and other routine camp duties
 
Position Requirements
  • Must have received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccination and booster by date of hire to be considered. Proof of vaccination will be required.
  • At least 21 years of age, per state camp guidelines
  • Current American Red Cross First Aid and CPR and AED certification (training provided)
  • Administration of Medication certification (training provided)
  • Experience working with children and youth in formal or informal settings
  • Positive, enthusiastic and flexible attitude.
  • Integrity, patience, adaptability, a sense of humor, enthusiasm, and a commitment to serve youth
  • Strong problem solving skills and an ability to adapt to changing program needs depending on weather, number of students, number of boats, etc.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Organization skills
  • Responsible and mature

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Previous experience with administering medication
  • EMT, RN or other medical license 
  • Lifeguarding Certification   
  • Experience supervising a staff
  • Experience with residential summer camps
  • Connecticut Safe boating certification
  • Small dinghy sailing experience

Physical/Mental Requirements and Environmental Conditions:

  • Deliver programs in venues that can be cold, wet, hot, or dirty; work outside in all weather
  • Position requires sufficient eyesight, hearing, and physical stamina to fulfill successfully the requirements of the Joseph Conrad Overnight Sailing Summer Camp program.
  • Weekend and holiday work assignments are required
