JOB DESCRIPTION

Shellfish Technician

OVERVIEW: The Shellfish Technician provides technical support for all activities related to the management of shellfish populations in the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe's usual and accustomed Treaty area. The Shellfish Technician works with the Harvest Manager, Director, as well as other Lower Elwha Klallam biologists to collect and report information pertaining to the utilization, protection, and enhancement of shellfish resources. The Shellfish Technician is under the supervision of the Shellfish Harvest Manager and works closely with other Natural Resources staff biologists and technicians for the Elwha Klallam Tribe.

LOCATION: Lower Elwha Tribal Fisheries Office and field work

SUPERVISED BY: Shellfish Harvest Manager

POSITION STATUS: Full-Time/Benefits

SALARY: $20.00-$25.00 (DOQ)

WORK SCHEDULE: 7:00 am to 5:30 pm, or as directed by Shellfish Harvest Manager

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION OF JOB:

  • Collect PSP and water quality sampling and deliver water and shellfish tissue samples to DOH;
  • Monitor shellfish harvest activities to ensure that harvests proceed in an orderly manner and agreements.
  • Collect biological data necessary for the management of shellfish resources;
  • Appropriately record biological and survey data;
  • Coordinate with monitors, enforcement, and shellfish biologists with PNPTC regarding the need for tract maintenance, sample collection, and violation concerns as needed.
  • Perform shellfish habitat and population surveys for inter-tidal and sub-tidal species
  • Assist in the preparation of technical reports
  • Assist in the maintenance of shellfish population and catch accounting databases
  • Serve as a Diver and/ or boat tender for 3-member dive teams carrying out the above stated tasks,
  • Assist in the compilation and reporting of biological and catch data;
  • Operate and maintain fisheries Tribal vessels (survey boats), field equipment and facilities
  • Conduct shellfish enhancement projects/activities as directed by the Shellfish Harvest Manager.
  • Assist in hatchery-related activities
  • Participate in career-development opportunities as requested by staff biologists such as dive training and certification
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Must work well as a member of a team, employing safe boating and diving practices that comply with all relevant tribal, state and OSHA requirements.
  • Must have the ability to work long hours on a boat, often in inclement weather and sea conditions.
  • Must have the ability to work with minimal direct supervision; work independently
  • Ability to follow instructions and adhere to prescribed directions, routines and schedules.
  • Must have the ability to communicate clearly and effectively
 
Position Requirements

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A high school diploma or GED, plus two (2) years work experience in a fisheries related field OR an Associate of Arts degree in Fisheries Technology or related field.
  • Must have a valid Washington State driver license
  • Must be familiar with word processing and spreadsheet programs
  • Basic scuba certification and the ability to pass a dive physical. Basic scuba certification must be completed within 9 months of hire.
  • Must complete First Aid/ CPR/ Emergency Oxygen certification within 3 months of employment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:

  • Ability to, lift, push and pull items up to 60 pounds Must be able to walk and hike near seashore; distance will vary
  • Physician approved level of fitness that enables physical demands of scuba diving in cold water conditions and the associated physically demanding harvest tract maintenance work.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to work in inclement weather conditions.
  • Must be able to travel in the performance of job duties
  • Must be able to comply with the LOWER KLALLAM TRIBE policies and procedures, including the Drug Free Workplace.
