Hatchery Manager

OVERVIEW: The Lower Elwha Fish Hatchery Manager manages and assists in all hatchery and other enhancement-related activities in the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe’s usual and accustomed treaty area. These include, but are not limited to: (1) proper husbandry of fish; (2) construction and maintenance of hatchery and other fisheries enhancement facilities and equipment; (3) maintenance of enhancement records and preparation of fisheries enhancements reports; (4) supervision and coordination of the activities of the hatchery staff. The Hatchery Manager is under the supervision of the Director and works closely with the Habitat biologist, and other tribal fisheries staff, as well as the Point-No-Point Treaty Council (PNPTC) and Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission (NWIFC).

SUPERVISED BY: Natural Resources Director

POSITION STATUS: Full-time w/benefits

SALARY LEVEL: $58,000 - $74,880 (DOE)

WORK SCHEDULE: 8 to 4:30, Monday thru Friday, periodic weekend duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB:

  • Insuring that all fish culture tasks are performed properly in accordance with relevant state and federal requirements and in accordance with the goals established in the Elwha Fish Restoration Plan.
  • Properly maintaining all enhancement facilities.
  • Managing the acquisition, maintenance, and use of equipment and supplies.
  • Participation in activities related to the Elwha River Ecosystem and Fisheries Restoration Act, as directed by the Department Director, including:
  1. Working with resource co-managers to identify, formalize and implement fish restoration plans
  2. Coordinating with the Habitat management staff to assist with the completion of annual reports, as needed.
  • Ensuring that all enhancement-related data records are properly maintained.
  • Preparation of hatchery and other enhancement reports as assigned by the Director.
  • Development and management of the hatchery budget under the supervision of the Director and submission of all relevant budgetary documentation to the appropriate tribal staff, as well as specific grant requirements.
  • Assisting with fisheries-related activities that may or may not be directly related to hatchery operations.
  • Supervising the hatchery staff.
  • Establishing and maintaining good communications with the Department Director, Fisheries Managers; other staff biologists, tribal staff, state and federal agency personnel, and members of the local community.
  • Other closely related duties as may be assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • Possessing knowledge of specific aspects of fisheries enhancement activities.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate workload and complete work assignments;
  • Ability to comply with TRIBAL policies and procedures;
  • Ability to follow instructions and adhere to prescribed routines and practices; and
  • Ability to meet and communicate orally and clearly with public

 

 

 
Position Requirements

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • An Associate of Science in aquaculture, fisheries technology, or related field plus 5 years of experience; or A Bachelor of Science in a fisheries-aquaculture, fisheries technology, or related field. + 2 years of experience; or a Master of Science in aquaculture, fisheries technology, or related field. Preference will be given to those experienced with hatchery propagation of Pacific salmonids that includes brood stock collection, egg take/fertilization, incubation, and rearing through juvenile life stages.
  • A valid Washington State drivers’ license

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:

  • Must be able to follow directions and guidelines

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Able to walk and stand for long periods of time, associated with fish enhancement activities
  • Able to bend, stoop and stretch
  • Able to lift 30 pounds or more
