About the Organization DRNY, the Protection and Advocacy System and the Client Assistance Program for New York State is seeking an individual with a passion for achieving justice for individuals with disabilities. With a focus on civil rights and disability justice, DRNY actively works to break down the systemic oppression of all people with disabilities. DRNY recognizes the intersecting legacies and effect of ableism, white supremacy, colonial capitalism, and gendered oppression on people with disabilities. Description

The Community Advocate will engage in individual and systemic advocacy on behalf of individuals with disabilities under the supervision of an Attorney. This includes outreach, community education, advocacy, and facilitation of direct client services. This position reports to the Program Director.

Essential Functions

The Community Advocate performs a wide range of duties, including the following:

  • Assist people with disabilities in advocacy and systems change efforts;
  • Act in accordance with identified Priorities and Goals of the PAIR and PAIMI Programs and Mission of the Creating New Avenues for Advocacy in the Fight for Safe and Accessible Transitional Housing Grant;
  • Identify and engage Rochester and Rochester area BIPOC communities where people with disabilities currently have limited access to supportive services;
  • Consult with people with disabilities, family members, advocacy groups, and others to identify barriers for people with disabilities to supportive services, with emphasis on access to accessible transitional housing;
  • Identify strategies to address barriers to accessible transitional housing;
  • Collaborate with Attorneys to develop training and education materials and conduct training and outreach activities to assist people with disabilities with limited access to supportive services;
  • Engage Rochester and Rochester area policymakers regarding the need for accessible transitional housing for people with disabilities;
  • Assist in preparing reports to funding sources;
  • Maintain accurate time and project records, including accurate use of the time keeping system necessary for DRNY to meet its programmatic and fiscal responsibilities;
  • Be available to travel, throughout New York State and outside of New York State as necessary to perform assigned job tasks.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant lived experience with housing insecurity with High School degree required;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Practical research skills;
  • Ability to provide education and training to large groups;
  • Strong communication skills;
  • Strong relationship building skills;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Strong problem solving skills;
  • Outstanding professionalism and ethical judgement;
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of individuals;
  • Residence in Rochester or Rochester area strongly preferred;
  • Lived experience with housing insecurity strongly preferred;
  • New York State Driver’s license preferred;
  • Ability to independently travel to offsite locations within NY; and
  • Must be able to provide evidence of COVID vaccine.

 

Working Conditions

The Community Advocate usually will perform work both in an office environment and in community settings. The mission of the organization may sometimes take the Community Advocate to non-standard workplaces. Significant interaction with community members and policymakers is anticipated. An Advocate will be expected to travel within and outside the state as necessary.

 

This position will require reporting to the regional DRNY office as directed as well as working remotely.
