Geneva College is a Christian liberal arts college in the reformed tradition located about 50 miles north of Pittsburgh. Founded in 1848 by the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America, Geneva has majors in both liberal arts and pre-professional programs, and offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Geneva's faculty provide a challenging education that prepares students for careers, for further education, and for life. In all fields of study, students are challenged to explore the implications of the Christian faith on their discipline. Geneva has approximately 1,350 students enrolled in its various programs taught by its faculty of nearly 70 members. The college seeks to prepare students to serve Christ and the world in all areas of society, including work, family, and the church. Geneva is a founding member of the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU).

Description

Summary of Responsibilities: This position provides strategic leadership and hands-on contribution in areas such as benefits, job classification, salary administration, employment, training, records, and employee/labor relations. The Director maintains a collaborative/advisory relationship with managers with regard to HR matters including employee recruitment and retention, compensation, performance management, employee, and labor relations.

Essential Responsibilities: (These essential responsibilities are those the individual must be able to perform unaided or with the assistance of reasonable accommodation.)

  1. General HR Leadership - Leading the HR team the Director takes an active role to:
    1. Develop and administer various human resources plans and procedures for all College personnel.
    2. Assist in planning, organizing, and directing all activities of the department. Participate in developing department goals, objectives, and systems.
    3. Develop, recommend, and implement personnel policies and procedures; prepare and maintain handbook on policies and procedures.
    4. Serve as secondary HR representative for labor relations including contract negotiation and contract administration.
    5. Oversee the maintenance of the College's organizational charts and employee directory.
    6. Provide staff employees with training and development.
    7. Provide input and guidance to VP of Business and Finance on HR activities and direction. Recommends new approaches, policies, and procedures to effect continual improvements in efficiency of department and services performed.
  2. Legal Compliance and Reporting:
    1. Establishes HR policies and implements procedures that ensure institution wide compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
    2. Communicates HR policies and procedures systematically and as needed.
    3. Advises and supports VP of Business and Finance for the purpose of managing institutional HR related risk.
    4. Establishes and maintains department records and reports. Participates in administrative staff meetings and attends other meetings, such as seminars.
    5. Oversees the analysis, maintenance, and communication of records required by law, governing bodies, or other departments in the organization.
    6. Participates in Campus Emergency Response Team (CERT) related to employee safety and health
    7. Oversees leave of absence approval and administration
  3. Compensation/Benefits
    1. In collaboration with VP of Business and Finance, develops, administers, and maintains a compensation system (non-faculty), designed to ensure campus wages that are competitive in the marketplace, internally consistent and appropriate to the work performed. Advises academic leadership on faculty compensation matters.
    2. Implements and annually updates compensation program; rewrites job descriptions as necessary; conducts annual salary surveys and develops merit pool (salary budget); analyzes compensation and benchmarks positions
    3. Monitors performance evaluation program and revises as necessary.
    4. In collaboration with VP of Business and Finance, develops and oversees benefits administration including plan design, claims resolution, annual re-evaluation of policies for cost effectiveness, benefits information programs and open enrollments.
    5. Track and project personnel variances in relation to the budget
  4. Employment, Employee Relations, Retention, and Training:
    1. Guides and assists campus leadership in the development and maintenance of an attractive and productive campus work culture that facilitates the effective recruitment and retention of a quality workforce.
    2. Develops and maintains effective recruiting processes and supports campus managers in the screening and selection of employees, as needed. Directs Employment Specialist to achieve recruitment objectives.
    3. Oversees new employee orientations and exit interviewing.
    4. Serves as a member of Title IX team including investigations of sexual misconduct.
    5. Counsels supervisors and employees on employee relations matters with the aim of mission accomplishment and achievement of organization objectives in the context of College values.
  5. Supervision:
    1. Supervises regular and student employees to include interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning, and directing work, coaching, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems.
    2. Must have a mindset of mentoring employees under supervision. Should be able to lead in a way that sets a good example, promotes teamwork, and encourages a positive, efficient work environment.

Job Requirements:

  1. General: Individuals must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed or are able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations in order to safely perform the essential responsibilities of the job.
  2. Physical: Must be able to perform the following: talking, hearing, and seeing. Must have sufficient manual dexterity to be able to operate all office equipment including, but not limited to computers, fax machines, copy machines, modems, and telephones.
  3. Confidentiality: Individuals must recognize that management of data, including personal information, grades, budgets, programs, and policies is necessary to the operation of the College. Such information must be kept private and confidential for the protection of the College and to obey Federal and/or State laws. Should there be doubt as to whether a certain matter is to be protected, it should be discussed with your supervisor before making a disclosure.
  4. Mental: Must be able to reason, analyze, prioritize, conceptualize, make judgments, and solve problems.

Qualifications:

  1. Minimum:
    1. Education/Certification: Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or a relevant field study
    2. Experience: Four years of generalist experience in field of human resources. 2-4 years of supervisory experience
    3. Skill/Abilities: Interpersonal, teamwork, critical thinking, problem solving, conflict resolution, leadership, verbal, and written communication, technologically adept, and ability to analyze data/information
    4. Christian Commitment: Eligible candidates must be a thoughtful and articulate Christian and an active member of an evangelical Christian church. Preference will be given to candidates who support and have an articulate understanding of the Reformed faith. The individual must understand and support the College’s “Foundational Concepts of Christian Education” by expressing an evangelical Christian profession of faith and demonstrate the ability to integrate a Christian perspective in their work.
  2. Preferred:
    1. Education/Certification: Master’s degree in business, human resources, industrial psychology, or another relevant field. PHR, SPHR, CEBS certification. Advanced knowledge of human resources concepts and practices and their implications in an organization. Knowledge of labor relations and collective bargaining. Knowledge of higher education industry.
    2. Experience: Seven years in generalist human resources position. Five or more years of progressive experience in leadership position(s). Experience in a higher education setting.
    3. Skill/Abilities: Creativity and high emotional intelligence
