POSITION SUMMARY
The incumbent will be a dental specialist treating endodontic and dental emergency patients with the TCRHCC dental program. Performs a full range of professional dental duties in connection with the treatment of commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative, or preventive measures, as well as specialized endodontic care including that of medically compromised patients. Treatment will be performed in a clinical setting. The incumbent will also be credentialed to perform emergent dental care as needed for patients of any age per the needs of the Dental Program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Responsible for the provision of specialty services in endodontics for the patients of the TCRHCC service area and to patients being treated when visiting from other service units
- Diagnostic services, through the use of history, radiographs, examination, diagnostic models, and other appropriate tests
- Full range of endodontic procedures including complex endodontic restoration of teeth having suffered severe and rampant caries, periodontal disease, and/or trauma to the oral cavity and supporting structures
- Emergency services including the treatment of trauma, pain and infection; will be expected to treat emergency/walk-in patients when needed or when specialist has broken appointments or cancellations
- Obtain consultation services in other areas as appropriate for cases requiring a team approach, but acts independently for complex cases involving his/her area of specialty
- May be called upon for services/consultations during non-clinic hours
- May be called upon for general dental duties other than treating endodontic patients
- Provide continuing dental education (CDE) on a national level through training courses such as the “IHS Challenges Course” for TCRHCC/Indian Health Service dentists, as well as on a local level/on-site for dental staff at TCRHCC
- Administer local anesthesia
- Recognize symptoms of an assortment of systemic diseases and refer cases for medical diagnosis
- Basic computer skills needed to complete administrative tasks, power point presentations for CDE lectures & courses
- Work with the Electronic Dental Record (EDR) and the Electronic Health Record (EHR) programs; training will be provided
- Responsible for electronic health records data entry pertinent to patient service role
- Provide in-service training to dental and non-dental personnel at TCRHCC
- Must complete all mandatory trainings and certifications as required of the position in the timeframe designated by supervisor (e.g. radiology, infection control, periodontal therapy, mandatory hospital trainings)
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; review courses
- Proficient in dental charting for exams and treatment planning
- Will work with the Electronic Dental Record (EDR) and Electronic Health Record (EHR) programs; training will be provided
- Responsible for electronic health records data entry pertinent to patient service role
- Ensure Proper PPE is used at all times while on duty. Face surgical mask is to be worn in all hospital areas. Proper handwashing is required. If water is not available use hand sanitizer. Social distancing will be practiced by department.
- Proper PPE is used inside assigned Clinics or Units. NIOSH- approved N95 Masks filtering face piece respirator or higher, if available, this includes eye or face shields, gloves, and isolation gowns.
- Complete all donning and doffing tasks in a safe acceptable method and discard of used PPE accordingly. Complete provided training.
- Performs other duties as assigned

Physical:
Prolonged periods of sitting with frequent standing and bending, as well as occasional walking, driving, climbing, kneeling, crouching, twisting, maintaining balance, and bending are required to perform intraoral procedures; good eye-hand coordination, dexterity, prolonged simple grasping, frequent firm grasping and fine manipulation and concentration are required and occasional use of keyboard. Must be able to lift, push and pull up to 10lbs continuously and occasionally up to 50lbs. Must have ability of near, far and color vision, depth perception, seeing fine details, hearing normal speech, hearing overhead pages, and telephone use.
Mental:
Considerable ingenuity, original thinking, and independent judgment are exercised and required of the incumbent. He/She is working with a group of people initially unfamiliar with health standards, the necessity for preventive care, and other essential health needs. The incumbent must be able to cope with problems and make judgments and evaluations of the situation and type of care needed. There may be stress involved when treating apprehensive, uncooperative, or physically compromised patients. Must be able to continuously handle high degree of flexibility, demonstrate high degree of patience, work in areas that are close and crowded, frequently cope with high levels of stress, make decisions under high pressure, handle multiple priorities in stressful situation, and occasionally cope with anger/fear/hostility of others in a calm way, manage altercations, work alone and adapt to shift work.
Environmental:
Work involves danger of exposure to radiation and communicable diseases. Incumbent uses lead shields to protect against radiation and wears face masks and gloves during treatment procedures. May continuously be exposed to chemical agents, loud noises, frequent exposure to dust, fumes and gases, and occasional exposure to extremes in temperature or humidity, and hazardous or moving equipment.
