Project Conservation Technician 

Description

The Margaret Herrick Library is seeking a Project Conservation Technician to assist the Conservation department with the preparation of our collections for exhibition and loan. You have a thorough knowledge of professionally accepted preservation and collection management practices and procedures including preventive conservation, rehousing, fabricating custom storage enclosures, conducting collection surveys, and laboratory maintenance. You are highly organized, detail oriented, possess excellent hand skills, and can prioritize multiple projects.

 

This is a part-time, limited term position through June 2022.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Perform basic book, paper, and photograph conservation treatments with full documentation.
  • Assist the Conservator with more complex conservation treatments.
  • Perform tasks in preparation for loans and exhibits such as hinging, mounting, stabilization, specialized packing, and condition documentation.
  • Fabricate/adapt specialized storage housings for the collection.
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Assist in monitoring the environments.
  • Assist with general lab duties and supplies maintenance.
 
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree and/or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • At least two years of experience in library preservation or paper conservation.
  • Working knowledge of accepted conservation standards, practices, terminology, and of proper use of conservation tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Aptitude for detailed hand work and superior manual dexterity.
  • Ability to work independently, following instructions set by the Conservator, and interfacing regularly with other staff.
  • Strong computer skills, including experience with PC platform and databases.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to share workspace respectfully with other staff.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work well with interns and staff.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50lbs. and stand and sit for extended periods of time with occasional climbing, bending, and kneeling.
