EMS Training Lieutenant 

Salary $60,205 DOQ  
Position Requirements

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent supplemented by a minimum of 6 years of progressive emergency medical services and/or firefighter experience and two years of cross-functional and progressively responsible experience including EMS training, EMS program management, at a rank of Firefighter-Paramedic II, Senior Paramedic/Paramedic Supervisor or higher or equivalent.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license with the appropriate Class to operate emergency medical vehicles.
  • Must possess or obtain a State of Georgia Firefighting Certification,
  • Must possess and maintain a State of Georgia License to practice as a NREMT – Paramedic,
  • Must possess and maintain a State of Georgia certification as an EMS Level II and III Instructor,
  • Must possess and maintain a national level certification as an EMS educator,
  • Must possess and maintain the following instructor certification(s): Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Instructor, Basic Life Support Instructor, Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support Instructor, Advanced Medical Life Support Instructor, Emergency Pediatric Care Instructor, PALS Provider, NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700 & 800,
  • An associate degree in fire science, criminal justice, paramedic technology, business or public administration or a related field is preferred.

 

Necessary Special Requirements:

  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • An applicant cannot have a felony conviction in the past ten years before their appointment, except for the provision outlined in O.C.G.A. 25-4-8 provision. O.C.G.A. 25-4-8, which address the inmate firefighters’ program through the Georgia Department of Corrections.
  • The Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council shall be the final authority with respect to authorizing employment and certification. In accordance with O.C.G.A. 25-4-8, a person who is seeking employment cannot have been convicted of a felony in any jurisdiction or of a crime, which if committed in this state, would constitute a felony under the laws of this state within ten years prior to employment, provided that a person who has been convicted of a felony more than five but less than ten years prior to employment may be certified and employed as a firefighter when the person has:
  • Successfully completed a training program following the Georgia Fire Academy curriculum and sponsored by the Department of Corrections.
  • Been recommended to a fire department by the proper authorities at the institution at which the training program was undertaken; and
  • Met all other requirements as set forth in this chapter

Description

Position Summary: This classification is assigned to the Administrative Division and responsible for performing duties within the Training section.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

 

  • Performs the duties of EMS training programs officer as assigned; assists in the development and implementation of EMS training programs; performs needs analysis to identify EMS training deficiencies within the department; ensures compliance with all local, state, federal and professional requirements, and standards; assists in the development of department standard operating procedures; researches and coordinates external training opportunities for department personnel.

 

  • Provides direct oversight of EMS training programs; assist with course development, course instruction. Develop training plan and department training curriculum, establishing fire department’s teaching standards and sets educational and learning standards for fire department personnel.

 

  • Oversees the maintenance of EMS training records, facilities, and EMS equipment. Schedules and coordinates various EMS training schedules and prepares materials for distribution.

 

  • Provides leadership and guidance to department personnel in procedures, protocols related to patient care. Evaluates performance of emergency medical care. Reviews documentation of calls and discusses difficult cases in order to improve future service delivery. Ensures the safety of all participants during EMS training exercise, may serve as an incident safety officer for significant medical emergency events.

 

  • Serve as a division/section officer during certain high acuity medical emergency incidents, responds to major incidents as a paramedic officer during times of staffing shortages or during any major incident to evaluate field personnel and to assist in the emergency.

 

  • Monitors any changes or additions to regulations, consults with state personnel and assures that City’s practices and procedures remain complaint with state regulations

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge and Ability

  • Comprehensive knowledge of general emergency services practices, emergency medical procedures and techniques; the equipment and supplies used in various emergency settings including the emergency care of patients and accident victims; the laws, regulations, and policies governing various emergency services functions including emergency medical care and operations; instructional and training principles, methods, and techniques for successful instruction of staff and the EMS certification process.
  • Conduct classroom instruction and use audio-visual aids; participate in providing emergency medical services, exercising sound judgment and using specialized medical equipment; establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and employees; interpret and apply applicable federal, state and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations; And Ability to apply principles of logical thinking and to solve a wide range of intellectual and practical problems where only limited information may exist
