Operations Director - Media/Publishing

Due to explosive growth, VertMarkets has created a brand new position for an Operations Director/ Custom Content - Media.  Demand for VertMarkets' LifeScience marketplace products and services has never been higher. By focusing on helping our clients solve a problem or achieve an outcome, not just selling them a product or service, we have significantly upgraded our technical infrastructure and dramatically expanded our capabilities to truly help our clients grow their business. The results these companies have realized have not only increased demand for, but also the complexity of, our campaigns. In order to continue to offer the highest possible level of service we need to add an Operations Director to our team in Cranberry, PA.

The Operations Director will initially hire, train, and manage local Operations employees across 3 customer facing departments: Custom Content, Digital Content, and Engagement Analytics in the Pittsburgh Office.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities :

1.  Custom Content Department

Within this department, the Operations Directors will be asked to establish working relationships with Custom Content clients to assist with the creation of their content strategies and to build processes to ensure those strategies are executed against and measured. Additionally, they will have primary responsibility for the content our clients submit for publishing within our network of publications. In this capacity, the Director will help establish best practices in accordance with the latest web publishing strategies taking into account things like SEO, content presentment, content tagging, and content distribution. Lastly, they will be responsible for fostering the professional development of the client content department.

  • Manages local Custom Content Writers (until an internal Copy Editor is hired)
  • Works with Business Development Managers and Content Services team members to help clients formulate their content strategy
  • Upholds service and process quality standards to ensure output exceeds client expectations
  • Oversees the coordination and integration of the required resources to execute client deliverables, including freelance budgets

2.  Web Content Department

  • Responsible for management and oversight of all local Digital Content Managers that manage all client content affiliated with their Audience Access programs, including: posting, optimization, repurposing, tagging, and distribution.
  • Develops processes, procedures, and work flows to ensure efficient client production work order management. Direct the company’s investment in tools and technologies to maximize efficiency and optimization of client Web Content.
  • Helps to establish best practices for posting client content that results in increased reader engagement and conversion; including effective internal and external SEO techniques and SEO copy writing, document type presentment templates.
  • Designs and communicates effective reporting systems; establishing baseline metrics for things such as conversion rates, time spent on site etc.

3.  Engagement Analytics Department

Within this department, the Operations Directors will be asked to establish working relationships with Custom Analytics clients to assist with the discovery and delivery of notable behavioral insights and to help to build processes to ensure those analytics are effective and efficient. 

  • Manages local Engagement Analysts
  • Works with Business Development Managers and Engagement Analysts to help clients formulate clearly and specifically understand what engagement data is “notable” and “actionable”
  • Upholds service and process quality standards to ensure output exceeds client expectations
  • Offers insights and suggestions on programs, algorithms, and other methods to process large volumes of data to help clients find sales qualified leads

4.  Operations and Talent Staffing

  • Build and manage a team of Content Writers, Digital Content Managers, and Engagement Analysts responsible for the management and delivery of all client programs and deliverables.
  • Coach team and provide regular performance evaluations to all direct reports
  • Identify employee growth areas and provide appropriate training opportunities and ensure completion
Position Requirements


Required Skills and Experience:

Candidates must have these qualifications at a minimum to enter the hiring process:

  • 5-7 years of B2B publishing, B2B content marketing, digital marketing or B2B agency experience
  • 3-5 years of in a client facing department as a manager, supporting the creation and delivery of projects
  • 3-5 years of search, social and content marketing experience
  • 3-5 years of personnel management required
  • Ability to communicate across various internal teams IRL and via slack/email
  • Ability to multi-task and handle many projects at once
  • Responsive, adaptive, flexible, and very proactive approach
  • A high degree of emotional intelligence, empathy, and compassion

Preferred:  Life Science Industry experience
