Purpose:

To assist in the administering of medications to residents as ordered by the attending physician in accordance with established nursing standards, the policies, procedures, and practices of the facility and the requirements of the state.

  • Report errors in the administration of medications.
  • Assist in programs of the facility that seek to determine if medication errors are taking place, when, where, and why they occur, and how they can be prevented.
  • Maintain a friendly, productive, working relationship with other members of the department of nursing, attending physicians, the Medical Director, and pharmacists.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance programs, the Pharmaceutical Services Committee, and any other facility committee or program that affects the medication pass and seeks to improve the performance and accuracy of the medication process.
  • Accurately and safely prepare, administer, and document the oral and/or topical medication per physician’s orders.
  • Assist in verifying that any medications brought into the facility by a newly admitted resident are examined and identified by the attending physician and the facility pharmacist.
  • Follow the labeling policies and practices of the facility and ensure that all medications administered are properly labeled a pharmacist.
  • Follow facility policies and procedures regarding the destroying of medications.
  • Assist in documenting and removing medications that are discontinued by the attending physician.
  • Ensure that medication is returned and reordered except emergency drugs.
  • Accurately measure, record, and report the vital signs of residents as indicated.
  • Observe and verify that medication is ingested or applied as directed. Document any instance where prescribed medication is not administered, including reasons for refusal and notify the Charge Nurse.
  • Follow the facility procedure for recording the medication administration and the resident clinical record including the verification of resident, type, route, dosage, frequency, and strength of each medication.
  • Follow established guidelines concerning the storage of drugs and biologicals.
  • Attend departmental and staff meetings as directed or called.
  • Attend and participate in in-service educational classes and on-the-job training programs, etc., as scheduled or directed.
  • Perform other related assignments as required.

 

Work Schedule

 

  • As assigned, including weekends, evenings, and Holidays.

 

Working Conditions

 

  • Works in well-lighted/ventilated areas.
  • Most of the work is performed indoors.
  • Is subject to frequent interruptions.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Is involved with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies, etc., under all conditions and circumstances.
  • Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, etc.
  • Communicates with the medical staff, nursing staff, and other department supervisors.
  • Works beyond normal duty hours, on weekends, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary.
  • May be exposed to bodily fluids, infectious waste, diseases, conditions, viruses etc.

 

Physical Requirements

 

  • While performing the duties of this job, employees will potentially be subject to sitting, standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting, crawling, writing, talking, listening, and using hands and fingers.
  • May be required to lift, push, pull, and move equipment, supplies, etc., in excess of fifty (50) pounds, including but not limited to chairs, beds, medical equipment, and patients in bed (with or without assistance).
  • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner.
  • Collect information through observation, listening, touching, and smelling.
  • Must have auditory ability sufficient to monitor and assess with or without assistance.
  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with the residents, personnel, and support agencies.
  • Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile people within the facility.
  • Must be able to assist in the evacuation of residents.

 

Safety, Sanitation, and Infection Controls

 

  • Ensure the assigned work areas are maintained in a clean, safe, and sanitary manner.
  • Ensure that established infection control and standard precautions practices are observed.
  • Report all hazardous conditions or equipment to your supervisor.
  • Follow established safety policies and procedures.
  • Dispose of refuse daily in accordance with established sanitation procedures.
  • Keep work/assignment areas free of hazardous objects, unnecessary equipment, supplies, etc.
  • Report any accident/incident to your supervisor no matter how minor.

 

 
Position Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Must possess, as a minimum, a High School Diploma or its equivalent.
  • Must be a licensed Certified Nursing Assistant in accordance with the laws of the state
  • Must be a Certified Medication Aide having successfully completed a state approved training program and any necessary examinations in accordance with laws of the State.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Must possess the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age-related needs of the residents served.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant.
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, regulatory agencies/personnel, and the general public.
  • Must be knowledgeable of computer systems, system applications, and other equipment relative to pharmaceutical services.
  • Must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm, as well as the willingness to handle difficult residents.
  • Must be trustworthy, holding resident’s medical and personal information in confidence at all times.
  • Must be able to cope with the physical, mental, and emotional requirements of the position.
