Description

As a hospital-based knowledge translation (KT) hub, Evidence-to-Care (EtC) is a small and mighty team of ‘process’ experts who partner with our rehabilitation clinical staff and families to move research evidence into practice through targeted projects. The Knowledge Broker will work under the direction of the EtC Manager in activities related to knowledge synthesis and mobilization. The Knowledge Broker brings an investigative lens to the team built on aptitudes of critical thinking, learning and problem-solving, and a passion for ‘evidence hunting’.

The Knowledge Broker will be responsible for executing fast-paced evidence reviews and determination of key findings to support decision-making related to program service and care delivery. A key focus will also include conducting more in-depth (rapid and/or full) systematic and scoping reviews working with internal teams across the organization to inform standards of care and clinical procedures with clinical partners.

Participating in working groups and developing productive relationships with Hospital knowledge users to clarify needs, understand evidence based practice, search and integrate evidence and communicate and highlight key findings are important in this role. This work may also include opportunities to contribute to developing tailored resources, driving dissemination, as well as building organizational capacity through design and delivery of KT workshops/webinars for varied audiences. The Knowledge Broker may also support KT product development, implementation and evaluation work led by the team’s KT Specialist and KT Lead, as needed. All members of the team are expected to stay current on best practices in KT.

This is temporary full-time (1.0 FTE) 1 year contract (12 months). Opportunities for renewal are based on funding availability and performance.

Responsibilities

Knowledge synthesis (50%)

  • Lead consultations with knowledge users to problem solve, identify knowledge needs and plan necessary synthesis activities
  • Execute synthesis activities and summarize research findings to form the basis of rapid evidence reviews, standards of care and KT products
  • Communicate and highlight key findings using tailored and lay language for varied audiences in different written and/or visual outputs

KT Capacity Building (15%)

  • Develop and/or contribute to workshops/webinars on aspects of KT practice for varied audiences
  • Apply and communicate use of KT science (theories, models and frameworks) in daily practice
  • Consult with researchers and clinicians on knowledge synthesis methodologies and other aspects of KT science and practice

Knowledge mobilization (35%)

  • Work with Evidence to Care team to contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of flagship knowledge translation products and strategies
  • Facilitate identification and integration of evidence into knowledge translation processes/practice, activities and outputs of Evidence to Care
  • Support creative and informational design of infographics, posters, slide decks and other visual-written dissemination materials applying lay language and accessibility principles
  • Contribute to scholarly opportunities as relevant, including conference submissions, manuscript development and other activities

Qualifications

Education

  • MA/MSc in a field relevant to childhood disability/pediatric rehabilitation or health-related discipline required
  • Knowledge translation certificate training (e.g., practice, implementation, synthesis, engagement)

Experience, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated understanding, application and passion for knowledge synthesis methodologies
  • Ability to interpret and identify key results from health and rehabilitation research and succinctly summarize findings in plain language in a range of outputs (slide decks, written reports and other formats) tailored for varied diverse audiences
  • Able to apply qualitative research methodologies to the analysis and interpretation of synthesis and/or evaluation data; quantitative methods and analysis is also of value
  • Strong practical and theoretical understanding of aspects of knowledge translation
  • Ability to pay meticulous attention to detail and produce consistently high quality and trustworthy work
  • Highly motivated individual who is able to take initiative, work both independently and collaboratively, and take on a variety of tasks as a member of a small team
  • Excellent time-management skills with ability to multi-task and balance projects with tight, short and/or far-off deadlines
  • Able to work with a variety of stakeholders to develop relationships and achieve shared goals; skills at anticipating and tactfully resolving stakeholder relation issues are an asset
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and presentation skills
  • Experience with computer applications to build knowledge translation products and resources (i.e.,  infographics, slide decks and/or video stories) is an asset
  • Genuine interest in childhood disability and desire to make an impact as a KT practitioner
  • Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism

Physical and Environmental Demands

  • Sedentary work primarily involving computer use and video conference participation
  • Shared team open space includes assigned adjustable sit/stand desks with desktop computers in the newly renovated Bloorview Research Institute (Toronto, ON)
  • Fully accessible physical space, including single all gender washrooms
  • Expectation of on-site activities; temporary hybrid working model (remote + in person) with eventual return to full in person presence
  • COVID screening required for hospital entry and medical-grade masks provided on site
