Description

Position Objective:  To support the Museum mission by keeping all exhibits in functioning order and completing repairs and maintenance to exhibits in a timely manner. Serves as a project leader for the fabrication and installation of exhibits. Oversees shop tool maintenance and safety programs. Provides preventative maintenance and cleaning of the exhibits and exhibit environments.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Specifies the selection of shop tools and materials.
  • Oversees the Exhibits Shop tool maintenance and safety programs.
  • Facilitates / assures the quality of contracted work.
  • Performs daily upkeep, maintenance, and cleaning of museum exhibits, for both indoor and outside exhibit areas, accomplishing repairs to exhibits as necessary to help ensure that the exhibits continuously deliver safe, dependable, and satisfying interactions for our members and guests.
  • Performs opening and closing functions for outdoor and indoor exhibits as assigned. Opening function includes verifying operation of outdoor kiosks and deploying exhibit devices, refreshing materials, consumables, and/or supplies. Closing function includes removal and safe storage of exhibit devices, materials, consumables and/or supplies; and lock-up of exhibits components as required. Both functions include inspecting exhibits for breakage, failure, or malfunctions.
  • Reports exhibit outages and collaborate to formulate plans for exhibits repair to bring exhibits back into operation in a timely basis.
  • Provides for effective and efficient shop layout and organization.
  • Oversees the daily shop fabrication and prototyping activities.
  • Serve as safety leader in the Exhibits Shop ensuring that all power tools are maintained, serviced, and properly operating in a safe manner. Recommends and specifies procurement of shop tools and supplies. Functions as principal trainer for medium to high-risk shop tools.
  • Develops / Creates / Builds prototypes with the Exhibits Team.
  • Builds new exhibits and accessories.
  • Recommends:
    • Improvements and/or redesigns for existing exhibits and implement these changes
    • Designs and/or adapts appropriate technologies to fulfill exhibit concepts and implements these in functioning prototypes.
  • Develops/Contributes:
    • Develops technologies and designs for new and existing exhibits.
    • Develops and implements exhibit prototypes.
  • Responsibilities for material planning /ordering.
  • Assist with installation of pop-up exhibits.
  • Coordinates Contractor work.
  • Flexibility to work weekend shifts and assist with other projects as needed.
 
Position Requirements
  • Excellent wood working skills; Proficient in finish carpentry.
  • In depth knowledge of table saws, chop saws, routers, band saws, sanders, nailers, and other work working machinery and tools.
  • Project Management experience: Ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Skilled in mechanical/electrical troubleshooting.
  • Prior experience in industrial or exhibit fabrication.               
  • Demonstrated success in a collaborative work environment.              
  • Initiative-taking; Effective communication skills.
  • General skills in computer basics, Internet, Windows, Spreadsheets.
  • High School Diploma; Valid NC Driver’s License
  • Flexibility to work weekends and holidays
  • Capable of climbing ladders, lifting 50 lbs., and working outdoors in changing weather conditions.
  • Able to pass background check prior to employment

Desired:

  • Cabinet building / installation experience.
  • Experience with laminates.
  • CAD/ Sketch Up software knowledge.
  • 3D Printing; CNC Machine experience.
  • Museum Exhibits Fabrication / Maintenance experience.
  • Degree in industrial design or related field.
