Senior Vice President, Public Relations

Opportunity Finance Network (OFN) is looking for a talented leader to not only build our public relations strategy, but also a dynamic team to define and execute strategic communications to attract top tier media coverage, cultivate a variety of stakeholders, and build awareness of CDFIs with national audiences, including potential investors, funders, and thought leaders. You will drive communication strategies and execution in a transforming organization. This role requires persuasive and clear writing, experience working closely with the media, and the ability to plan and coordinate programs that integrate social media, employee communications, and events with public relations initiatives. OFN is a leading national network of CDFIs (community development financial institutions) headquartered in Washington D.C. In pursuit of our mission to align capital with social, economic, and political justice, OFN supports its 350+ member CDFIs with money, strength, and voice to drive transformational change in underserved rural, urban, and Native communities nationwide. We help money flow to people and places where traditional finance doesn't reach. As a financial intermediary, OFN secures private capital for CDFIs through strategic partnerships with leading corporations such as Google and Twitter, mainstream financial organizations such as Bank of America and Wells Fargo, and philanthropic organizations such as the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

OFN builds the strength of its membership and other CDFIs through financial products and services, events, training, research, policy advocacy, and visibility. Currently OFN has an on-balance sheet loan portfolio of $150 million and manages capital on-and off-balance sheet of nearly $1 billion and has plans to bring additional $1 billion in new private capital to the industry.

Core Responsibilities:

Design and lead OFN's media outreach program. Identify and cultivate key reporters to advance overarching public relations goal and promote CDFI industry.
Craft and implement proactive outreach strategies to reach external opinion leader and influencer audiences. Leverage OFN's events, especially the annual conference, to amplify the CDFI industry's positive image with priority audiences.
Write press releases, media pitches, and op-eds as needed.
Manage media inquiries and speaker invitations for CEO and other OFN leaders to maximize impact. Prepare OFN CEO and other spokespeople for media interviews and speaking engagements.
Create timely internal resources to increase response time and recommend most effective approaches such as speaking points, including key messages, data, and borrower stories.
Develop metrics for tracking success of OFN's public relations activities.
Leverage earned media and speaking appearances in OFN's industry communications channels such as the blog, social media, etc.
Supervise staff members and outside public relations contractors as required.

 
Position Requirements

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree or 10+ years of direct work experience in lieu of a degree; Graduate Degree preferred.
  • 10+ years professional experience in Public Relations or Communications required.
  • 5+ years in a supervisory or managerial capacity required.
  • 5+ years of demonstrated experience in community/economic development, community organizing, social justice advocacy or public policy advocacy preferred.
  • Strong writing, financial and analytical experience required.
  • A strong passion for, understanding of, and commitment to OFN’s mission, vision and values; familiarity with the CDFI industry strongly preferred where one can be a fearless advocate, who is confident and resilient in OFN’s fight to drive capital into low-income communities.
  • A collaborative team player who possesses good interpersonal skills to work across all levels of the organization, humility, and a willingness to learn in all areas of our work.
  • Smart, quick seeker of knowledge with the ability to think creatively and have the ability to adapt content for social media, blog posts, and forums.
  • Ability to manage relationships and analyze trends.
  • Ability to set priorities and delegate tasks effectively required.
  • Superior analytical and organizational skills required
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills required
  • Must have strong creative judgment, and able to act as strong influencer of creative ideas while also collaborating with business partners to achieve desired results.
  • Ability to understand, create and modify external communications and publications as needed; keen storyteller.
  • Superior interpersonal skills and ability to work constructively with diverse constituents is required.
  • In-depth understanding of media promotions.
  • Light to moderate travel required (10%-20%of time).
  • Understanding of and commitment to community development required.
