The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the Senior Plant Operator will assist in directing the engineering operations and mechanical maintenance in a safe and efficient manner. This includes providing skilled plant engineering services by applying technical expertise to equipment, systems, and controls. You will also train and supervise department staff in the maintenance of critical building equipment including mechanical, life, safety, plumbing, and electrical systems.

You Will:

  • Oversee and undertake appropriate operation of chillers, boilers, cooling towers, and other plant equipment to maintain an environment that supports the mission of the museum, restaurant, and special events.
  • Coordinate closely with client departments to ensure alignment of goals and minimize disruption to operations.
  • Train and supervise engineering staff on appropriate tasks.
  • Oversee maintenance of generator, fire alarms, sprinklers, and related life-safety systems.
  • Schedule and oversee repairs and preventative maintenance on equipment and systems both manually in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and industry-recommended best practices. Direct staff and vendors in pursuit of this goal.
  • Monitor all Building Management System (BMS) system alarms and uses judgement and expertise to analyze problems, adjusting, and calling service vendors to make repairs.
  • Utilize the CMMS and other documentation and automation tools, maintains files such as the central plant log, maintenance history, lock out tag out records, hot work permits, safety and training records, and records of completed work.
  • Provide reports requested by other departments. Research and recommend changes that enhance efficiency. Report deficiencies to the Chief Engineer.
  • Manage maintenance agreements for the safe and proper operation of all mechanical equipment and inspect the work by outside contractors.
  • Comply with all applicable Cal-OSHA, NFPA, EPA, NEC and other state and local building codes.
  • Actively participate in safety inspections, training, hazard abatement, and Cal-OSHA compliance to ensure a safe environment for staff and visitors.
  • Assist in preparation of department budget and monitor expenditure of funds in budget.
  • Recommend capital expenditures, service contracts, supply and tool procurement, and training for the ongoing efficient operation of all systems.
  • Participate in ongoing re-commissioning, calibration, and efforts to improve operations and reduce costs.
 
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • HVAC technician certificate.
  • EPA 608 refrigeration license.
  • A valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and a good driving record.
  • 5+ years of experience managing operations of central plant centrifugal chillers, boilers, cooling towers, AHU, VAV, FCU, generators, and water treatment systems.
  • A strong understanding of building electrical systems including 208V/3-phase systems and experience working with voltage levels between 5V and 480V.
  • Experience managing teams with diverse skill sets and backgrounds in a mission critical facility.
  • Experience drafting and editing clear and functional MOPs and SOPs.
  • Proficient computer skills and demonstrated experience with office software, email applications, work order systems (CMMS) and BMS systems.
  • Ability to read and understand design drawings, as-built shop drawings, maintenance manuals, and control drawings.
  • Knowledge of water treatment principles for boilers, chiller systems, and cooling towers.
  • Ability to quickly respond to equipment failures by troubleshooting and restoring equipment.
  • Flexibility to work a variable schedule including evenings and weekends in support of special events.

Physical Requirements:

  • Lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces.
