The Position:

The School-Based Mental Health Therapist is an on-site direct service and supportive service provider at Quetzal, an alternative education placement option for students enrolled in Alta Vista Alternative High School or Alta Vista Alternative Junior High School. The Mental Health Therapist works with students and staff in order to promote social-emotional learning and provide trauma-informed mental health services to support student success and positive social and academic engagement. The Mental Health Therapist also works with community agencies to make appropriate referrals.

FSA strives to be a trauma-informed and resilience-oriented organization. Because working with those impacted by trauma can affect staff in various ways, FSA actively identifies and employs methods to support staff to embody a healthy and sustainable balance of care for both themselves and others.

Sample Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with Quetzal staff and students to identify and facilitate classroom practices, such as 'mindful moments,' 'restorative circles,' and 'reflection rooms,' that can promote positive self-regulation and relationship/community building skills.
  • Model, prompt, encourage, reinforce, and provide psychoeducation to students regarding positive social-emotional skills, including responsible decision-making, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and self-awareness.
  • Help students understand the connection between adverse childhood events and dysregulated behavior/traumatic stress reactions. Support students in replacing survival coping strategies with healthier coping alternatives.
  • Provide crisis intervention services and assist Quetzal staff in responding to concerning student behavior, following a trauma-informed, culturally-sensitive approach that is supported by ACE-related science.
  • Provide direct, trauma-informed, mental health services to students through mental health screenings and direct counseling support (individual, group, family, crisis, and drop-in).
  • Assist students in developing self-management skills, such as those described in the Community Resiliency Model (CRM), to enhance student resiliency in response to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs).
