POSITION SUMMARY: Moravian University, the nation's sixth oldest college institution, and a master's comprehensive university, seeks an energetic, talented, and collaborative leader to become its next Director of First-Generation Student Initiatives to directly support students who are the first in their families to attend college.

 

A key aspect of the current multi-year strategic plan includes "Together Toward Equity", which focuses on diversity, equity, and inclusion. These values are also weaved throughout each of the other areas of the plan.

 

The Director will be a part of the Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion whose mission is to support historically underrepresented and marginalized students, faculty, and staff and to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the institution. The Director will work closely with faculty and staff colleagues in support of first-generation students.

 

Reporting to the Vice President and Dean for Equity and Inclusion, the Director will collaborate with faculty, staff, academic departments, and administrative offices to deliver high-impact programming to improve and support first generation student experiences as they transition to campus and navigate their way to graduation.

 

The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to forge meaningful and sustained interpersonal connections with students and possess exceptional intercultural communication skills. We seek a courageous and inclusive leader to coordinate our first-generation student initiatives who is student-centered, approachable, and equity-minded. An essential component of the role will be working cross-departmentally to build and maintain active relationships with Student Life, Student Success, Enrollment, and Institutional Advancement.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop a case-management plan for monitoring and tracking first-generation students based on a cohort model – especially students in their first-year on campus.
  • Provide leadership and advocacy toward outcomes that support outstanding academic and social, collegiate experiences for first generation students.
  • Collaborate with a range of offices and divisions in support of first-generation students including, but not limited to, the Counseling Center, Career and Civic Engagement, Spirituality and Inclusion, Student Life, Enrollment, Student Success.
  • Develop, implement, promote, and assess initiatives for first-generation student success and engagement, including, but not limited to, lectures, onboarding resources, and mentoring.
  • Provide assistance and program coordination for the Alpha chapter of Alpha Alpha Alpha, the national honor society for first-generation college students.
  • Work with campus partners to create programming that helps transition new students into Moravian University during the summer and early fall.
  • Deliver workshops and programs to first-generation students on issues related to their transition and journey through college.
  • Collaborate with other faculty, staff, academic departments, and administrative offices to promote leadership opportunities to first-generation students (e.g. undergraduate research, student leadership, student employment, athletics and recreation, etc).
  • Work with Institutional Advancement to cultivate relationships with first-generation alumni.
  • Coordinate outreach and support for first-generation families.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience with increasing complexity and leadership responsibilities in a physical, in-person college or university setting;
  • The gravitas and political acumen to effectively engage a diverse audience to articulate the place and role of First-Generation initiatives in advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and community;
  • Clear evidence of leadership in diversity, equity, and inclusion and a record of working collaboratively with a wide range of constituencies (staff, students, faculty, families, administrators, etc.) with diplomacy, empathy, and tact;
  • Expressed sensitivity to and demonstrated understanding of the needs of a diverse student body;
  • Strong knowledge of current and emerging practices in student success initiatives, particularly relating to first generation and low-income students;
  • A record of success in developing strategic partnerships, collaborating with academic units, and demonstration of high-impact programming and relationships with students;
  • Demonstrated strong leadership and strategic management skills and ability to work and lead people;
  • Experience in data collection and data analysis, as well as demonstrating competency in assessment and evaluation of student service activities in an educational setting to improve services to students.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Fluency in Spanish;
  • A Master's degree in an academic area or in higher education/leadership.
