Description

Position Overview:

Fellows will have the opportunity to gain a strong understanding of the issues surrounding food insecurity in the DMV Area. While working with experts in the field, fellows will get an in-depth look into various programs and approaches that are being deployed directly by the Food Bank and indirectly through partners to address the issue of food insecurity both in the short and longer term. Fellows are a vital part of the Capital Area Food Bank, the largest organization in the Washington metro area working to address food insecurity issues, because together we can solve hunger™.

The Development Fellow will work closely with the Director of Major Gifts and other key fundraising staff. They will be responsible for assisting with donor research and support of other important cultivation and stewardship activities amongst the fundraising team. This role will work to find, review, analyze and summarize individuals and contacts that should be interested in CAFB’s mission and work, with an eye towards strategic engagement and possible long-term supporters. The Fellow will be trained on our Sales Force donor database and will learn fundraising best practices from the individual and institutional giving teams. The ideal candidate is a highly organized, a motivated self-starter, and able to work well with multiple individuals on several projects each quarter.

Essential Functions:

  • Construct research profiles on current donors, prospects and new qualified prospects from the tools provided. Note any alignments to their personal and professional background to our mission and programs for the purpose of strategy and developing appropriate action items.
  • Review print and online materials on prospects, summarizing relevant details in a donor profile.
  • Draft fundraising communications to be used in major donor outreach and stewardship
  • Assist in project managing donor engagement initiatives
  • Assist in any preparations for donor meetings
  • Data entry of new prospects information and upload any new information gleaned on current contacts in Sales Force database
  • Support Salesforce pipeline management
  • Support the development team during special events, tours, receptions and volunteer events.

Position Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

  • Hybrid postion : Must be able to come into the Washington DC office 2-3 days out the week 
  • Time frame: Rolling, six month maximum
  • College junior/senior, graduate students, or recent college graduates
  • Highly organized and efficient; with the ability to prioritize and get things done on schedule and work under pressure to meet deadlines;
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team;
  • Demonstrated initiative and creativity; and
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and respect for priorities and work pressures of colleagues
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in Excel, Word, Power Point and Outlook
  • Commitment to understanding and supporting CAFB’s mission, and an ability to build and run events that highlight the organization’s work.
  • Organizational skills and ability to manage and drive multiple projects and priorities at once, often with tight deadlines
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Team-oriented, and ability to work with different types of people both across and outside of the organization to manage logistics and solve problems
  • Experience with donor databases like Sales Force (preferred)

 

Physical requirements:

  • Physical activities involve sitting for 80% of the work day.
  • Occasionally lifts office supplies up to 15 pounds.
  • Ability to travel to sites, on occasion, throughout the metropolitan area.
