COBOL Software Developer  

Description

The Software Developer will work building and maintaining the core Payroll application and custom programs on the payroll module specific to client’s third-party administrators. As a Software Engineer you will be responsible for working with both a Payroll SME and the Payroll Integration Analyst to continue to evolve our Payroll application and to build payroll custom integration files to various retirement, stock, flexible spending, health savings account and other administrators. Responsibilities also extend to writing programs to third party time files and HR files for importing into Ascentis Payroll.

What are the general responsibilities of the position?

  • Develop new back-end services and extend-and-improve existing functionality
  • Develop new user-facing features and maintain and extend existing capabilities
  • Collaborate with Senior Engineers to ensure feasibility and economical sense of the designs
  • Create elegant, reusable, high quality, efficient and scalable code
  • Effectively learn new programming languages, frameworks, libraries as required by the team goals
  • Utilize modern coding techniques such as TDD, BDD, etc. to keep code clean and easily maintainable
  • Investigate latest trends in the market and collaborate with decision makers on defining future direction of software development within Ascentis
 
Position Requirements
  • High level of spoken and written English language
  • Experience with maintaining complex COBOL code
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments with the ability to self-manage time, priorities and deliver results within an expected schedule
  • Self-starter and ability to think outside the box
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment maintain a positive and supportive attitude within the team
  • Proficient using code versioning tools such as Git and Stash
  • Experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment
  • Experience with Object Oriented design and development a plus
  • Experience with Microservices or SOA architectures a plus
  • Leadership skills
  • Strong ability to learn from existing legacy code, derive essential functionality and translate to new model and design as required

Education/experience/technical considerations:

  • Computer Science or equivalent degree a strong plus
