Description

Second Harvest Food Bank provides 11 million pounds of food assistance annually, to over 75,000 people per month through its network of 150 member agencies and programs. By increasing access to healthy food, Second Harvest is making a profound impact towards growing a healthier community.

 

JOB SUMMARY  

Reports to: Warehouse Manager and Sort Room Coordinator  

Supervises: Temp staff, and volunteers 

 

The Sort Room Specialist supports the Sort Room Operations at SHFB. She/he is the primary backup for the Sort Room Coordinator. Sort Room Activities are accomplished through the training and deployment of a large and diverse group of paid staff and volunteers in a warehouse setting. The SRC coordinates daily food sorts, setting up sort lines, moving raw, and packed product, and documenting data critical for inventory control.  The SRC delivers daily orientation how to sort and ck donated food, provides safety training, and ensures excellent customer service to the volunteers who come each day to support the food bank. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

 

Customer Service 

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships and deal tactfully, cooperatively, and effectively with the Sort Room Coordinator, staff members, volunteers, agencies, community organizations, growers, packers, processors, and potential donors. 
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with the Sort Room Coordinator.  
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with people from different racial, ethnic and cultural groups and from different backgrounds and lifestyles; demonstrates knowledge of and sensitivity to their needs. 

 

Leadership 

  • Supervise the training and daily work of temp staff, volunteers, court referrals and trainees in sorting and packing activities 
  • Collaborate with warehouse, agency relations, and development staff to ensure the smooth functioning of daily sort activities. 

 

Warehouse Operations 

  • Move a variety of foodstuff and related material in and about the warehouse for the purpose of inspection/sorting/packing. 
  • Safely drive a forklift and operate pallet jacks in a warehouse setting. 
  • Work with the Sort Room Coordinator to establish clear expectations for volunteers and lead the in packaging of FFC bags, UDSA bags, some FFFF bags and EPP boxes. 
  • Ensure accurate record keeping; making sure all data entry and paperwork is complete. 
  • Maintain safe food handling practices. 
  • Maintain safe warehouse practices. 
  • Assist in the distribution of commodities (including USDA and TEFAP items). 
  • Maintain the Sort Room and produce area in a clean and orderly condition as required by AIB Food Safety Standards. 

 
 

 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:  

Strong customer service experience, any experience managing volunteers a plus. Two years of warehousing or inventory experience.  Any experience in safe food handling, storage, and transport.  

 

Knowledge/Skills/Ability 

  • Knowledge of safe food handling requirements for transport and storage. 
  • Knowledge of produce and ability to determine quality and estimate edibility. 
  • Some knowledge of inventory control practices, procedures, and recordkeeping methods. 
  • Ability to work as a part of a team, to foster teamwork and to provide excellent service to coworkers and customers. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with people of various ages, educational, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. 
  • Must have a minimal ability to use computers. 
  • Solid math skills. 
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish is desirable. 

 

Physical Requirements 

  • Able to repeatedly lift bulky items weighing as much as 50 pounds. 
  • Able to see and read documents. 
  • Able to hear normal conversations in person and on the phone. 
  • Able to work in a cold environment. 
  • Bi-manual dexterity. 
  • Requires standing throughout the day.  

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Forklift certification preferred. At a minimum, must enroll in training program immediately upon hire. 
  • Must have access to a motor vehicle, as well as valid auto insurance coverage, for occasional driving on the job. 
  • It is the responsibility of all SHFB personnel to participate in our Food Safety/Food Defense programs. 
  • In instances of a federal, state or locally declared emergency, Second Harvest is typically considered an essential service and emergency responder; of all its employees may be called in to perform regular or emergent duties.

Shared cost medical insurance: Kaiser and Blue Shield. Eligibility begins on the first day of month following 30 days of employment (i.e. if you are hired June 20th, you are eligible starting August 1st). This benefit package is valued at an average of over ten thousand dollars a year.

Job Details:This is a full-time, regular, non-exempt position with a competitive hourly salary, DOE.Occasional weekend and evening work may be required.
