Director of Education and Practice Development

REPORTS TO: Chief Nursing Officer, Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services

The Director of Education and Practice Development is responsible for the development and implementation of patient care services educational programming, practice development, and quality improvement initiatives across the hospital, as required. Such programs include the maintenance of regulatory and practice standards and competencies. The position is responsible for the line management of the Educators. The Director of Education and Practice Development will intervene as appropriate with education and/or facilitation of education to maintain excellence in the department’s delivery of care. The Director of Education and Practice Development is responsible for the collection, collation, and presentation of departmental quality metrics, corrective action plans, and audits, as appropriate, in collaboration with the VP of Nursing, VP of Social Welfare and Behavioral Health, the Director of Perioperative Services, and the Nurse Manager and Supervisor team. The Director of Education and Practice Development will enter and maintain quality data in a strategic dashboard to be presented monthly or quarterly at the relevant Hospital and Departmental Leadership Committee Meetings, as required. The Director of Education and Practice Development is responsible for ensuring that Quality data is used to inform quality improvement initiatives, leading, and in collaboration with other major stakeholders, improving the patient-family experience and outcomes. Promotes evidence-based practice and research to generate new knowledge. The Director of Education and Practice Development is responsible for entering and maintaining the NDNQI database. Demonstrates proficiency in technology, products, and devices that support nursing practice in the specialty areas.

Position Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Licensed and currently registered to practice professional nursing in New York State.
  • A minimum of BS degree in Nursing required.
  • MS in Nursing, or equivalent required.
  • American Heart Association BLS required.
  • ANCC Specialty certification preferred.
  • Clinical Nurse Specialist/NP in related specialty of nursing preferred.

 

Experience:

  • Progressive leadership experience appropriate to the position within a hospital milieu.
  • Extensive clinical nursing practice experience required.
  • Teaching and mentorship experience required.
  • Ability to work effectively with others and ability to manage personnel.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and evaluating quality improvement and patient experience projects that led to improvements in patient outcomes required.
  • Knowledge of regulatory agency standards.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in technology, products, and devices that support clinical practice
  • Membership in at least one professional organization preferred.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to lift or assist in lifting client from bed to chair to standing or vice versa.
  • Must be able to respond quickly in an emergent situation.
  • Must be able to communicate orally in an emergent situation.
  • Must be able to use stairs in an emergent situation.
  • Must be able to walk, carry semi-heavy equipment and reach overhead.
  • Must be able to communicate orally and in writing with patients, staff, and colleagues.
