Description

The Animal Care position is responsible for the direct care of the animals housed at the Asheville Humane Society and the Buncombe County Animal Shelter. Animal Care has the responsibility of cleaning, feeding, basic care, husbandry, and enrichment of the animals, as well as providing customer service to Buncombe County citizens visiting the shelter. The Animal Care position works as part of the Shelter Operations and has frequent contact with co-workers, volunteers, and members of the public. The ideal candidate has excellent interpersonal skills, is highly motivated, organized, and detail-oriented, and likes working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. The ability to juggle multiple demands and work collaboratively is critical. Working environment includes exposure to loud noises. This position may include weekend hours and work schedule may vary depending on the organizational needs of Asheville Humane Society. Work is evaluated by periodic checks for overall effectiveness and results achieved efficiency, and ability to uphold AHS' standards of cleanliness and sanitation.

 
Position Requirements

Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Basic computer knowledge
  • Ability to work flexible schedule of 24 hours per week; Sunday-Saturday; including holidays
  • Ability to apply proper animal handling skills and knowledge of individual animal temperament
  • Ability to work with volunteers, co-workers, and the general public in a professional manner
  • Ability to work independently, balance multiple projects, and meet deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, written, and communication skills
  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds to a level of at least 4 feet high
  • Ability to work continually in a fast-paced environment for a minimum of 8 hours
