SUMMARY: The Behavioral Health Pediatric Clinician Lead performs the general duties of a Behavioral Health Clinician: assesses and evaluates the health care needs of patients, performs diagnostic and therapeutic treatment, and institutes and manages behavioral healthcare for patients. In addition, the Behavioral Health Pediatric Clinician Lead provides professional support and therapeutic guidance to Behavioral Health Clinicians providing mental health and addiction services to child, adolescent, and teen patients. Working as an integral member of the pediatric care team (including physicians, advance practice clinicians, nurses, case managers, and medical assistants) the Behavioral Health Pediatric Clinician Lead provides oversight to frontline services that identify, triage, manage and provide pediatric services for patients with overlapping physical needs. The Behavioral Health Pediatric Clinician Lead provides training to therapists serving child, adolescent, and teen patients in the areas of assessment, documentation, referral, support, education, skill-training and compliance.

 
Position Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: These essential responsibilities are performed within the context of collaboration and coordination of the patients’ pediatric primary care team. Patient visits occur through “warm hand-offs” and referrals from medical providers.

  • Collaborate and assist behavioral health clinicians, medical practitioners and other health care team members in recognizing and treating emotional, behavioral and mental health disorders, including substance abuse and dependence in the pediatric patient population.
  • Supervise and provide short-term problem-focused therapy based on clinic need and patient demand. Following an initial assessment, services are generally provided in 30-60 minute sessions. Longer term therapy can be provided if clinically justified.
  • Provide clinical supervision and training to assigned pediatric behavioral health clinicians, associates, and master level students as assigned.
  • Assign trainings to therapeutic staff based on assessed needs, provide a review of patient records for compliance to standards of the organization, state regulation, and requirements of the payer.
  • Assist Behavioral Health Director in the evaluations of staff assigned.
  • Provide oversight to the evaluation and referral of at-risk patients to the continuum of care available within Open Door and in the community, including long-term counseling and therapy, substance abuse treatment and psychiatric assessment and services. Integrate consult reports into pediatric care treatment plans as appropriate.
  • Coordinate with Open Door case managers to address support, logistic, service, benefit, insecurity and social needs.
  • Accurately record psychological and behavioral health histories, assessments, diagnoses, interviews, safety planning, ongoing care and referrals in the electronic health record according to established protocols. Provide and supervise training to BH providers as needed.
  • Work to de-escalate inappropriate patient behavior and crisis situations; perform risk assessments and collaborate with external agencies when needed to assure patient safety.
  • Assure adherence to ODCHC policies and protocols.
  • Other related duties as identified, assigned and required.

ESSENTIAL EXPECTATIONS:

  • Clinical activity: minimum of 0.8 FTE working at ODCHC clinic
  • Administrative time: 0.2 FTE for administrative functions to include supervision and program development.

QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will possess experience and skills spanning a variety of areas.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to establish constructive working relationships with physicians, advanced care practitioners, nurses, case managers, other clinic staff and community practitioners and resources.
  • Documented clinical and practical experience in treating childhood mental health disorders, to include training and supervision of therapeutic staff according to CA BBS criteria.
  • Ability to establish rapport and professional relationship with patients and their families from all parts of the community who experience a broad range of emotional, mental, and behavioral health disorders typically in conjunction with physical health needs.
  • Ability to intervene in difficult, confrontational and/or crisis situations in a manner which works to de-escalate tensions while maintaining safety and seeking resolution.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, policies and procedures and government regulations.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, tolerate interruptions, and shift focus quickly to respond to immediate needs within the clinic, while maintaining productivity standards for our therapists.
  • Experience in similar position in a community health center or outpatient mental health clinic.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Licensed by the State of California as Clinical Psychologist, Clinical Social Worker, or Marriage and Family Therapist

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This is a supervisory position; however, the Behavioral Health Pediatric Clinician Lead works collaboratively with members of the health care team, site management, while providing clinical supervision to licensed mental health workers, associates, and masters level multi-disciplinary students.

SUPERVISION AND SUPPORT: Behavioral Health Clinicians usually work within site supervision and logistic issues in the domain of the clinic’s Administrative Director and Site Medical Director. The Behavioral Health Pediatric Clinician Lead reports to the Behavioral Health Director and provides overall guidance, consultation, clinical supervision, policy/procedure expectations, and training to behavioral health staff.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This is largely an office-based position. The physical requirements described are representative of those needed to successfully perform the essential duties of the position.   • Speaking and hearing sufficient to communicate effectively by telephone, video or in-person at normal volumes.
  • Vision adequate to read documents, computer screens, forms.
  • Ability to move around the clinic throughout the day to meet patients in exam rooms and meet with other members of the health care team in various locations.
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to use keyboard and view computer screens for extended periods of time.
  • Have reliable means of transportation to travel throughout ODCHC service area and to meetings outside of the area as necessary, including an insurable driving record and California Driver’s License as necessary.
