Personal Care Attendant (PCA)

Job Summary:

Personal Care Attendant (PCA) – PCAs are non-certified caregivers who are on a pathway to transition to a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). PCAs will work under the supervision of a licensed or registered nurse for a minimum of 80 hours, successfully complete competencies that have been established by Department of Medicaid Services, in all areas of required nurse aide training, by an instructor who is a licensed nurse confirmed by the facility to have completed instructor training required by the Department for Medicaid Services. After passing the exam and with good performance history, the PCA will be promoted to a CNA. There is no CNA coursework required while special rules are in place during the pandemic.

Upon hire, Masonic will place the PCA’s name on the Kentucky PCA registry.

Upon passing the CNA exam, the employee will review and sign a CNA job description and agrees to work in that capacity in any household or department assigned.

Common Responsibilities of PCAs after training, competency and before passing CNA exam:

  • Assist residents with activities of daily living as documented in their assignment sheets and care plan, and according to resident preferences.
  • Maintain awareness of residents' whereabouts at all times.
  • Keep patient information confidential.
  • Documents actions by completing forms, reports, logs, and records.

Examples of care for residents who are not in isolation includes the following:

  • Transfer - residents requiring standby assist - can help with those who need more assist as long as CNA or Nurse is present. This includes Bed to Chair
  • Handling Soiled Linen
  • Passing Water
  • Passing Trays
  • Making Beds
  • Disinfecting areas of care and other common areas
  • Disinfecting equipment
  • Respond to call lights
  • Obtain Temperatures - can NOT obtain via rectal thermometer
  • Help with re positioning
  • Oral Care - Must be conscious resident only - included brushing of teeth or assistance with dentures
  • Place Hearing Aides - Conscious resident only
  • Place eye glasses
  • Combing of Hair
  • Help with Bed Bath and Bed Bath Setup
  • Floating Heels and Off loading heels
  • Transporting Resident

These tasks cannot be performed by PCAs at any time:

  • Cannot enter the resident’s room if they are in isolation.
  • Cannot perform any duties for a resident who is in isolation.

 

 
Position Requirements

Physical requirements:

  • Must be capable of climbing ladders/stairs using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.
  • Must be able to stoop by bending forward at the waist and bending body downward.
  • Must be able to kneel by bending legs at knees.
  • Must be able to extend hands and arms in any direction.
  • Must be able to stand for sustained periods of time.
  • Must be able to move about independently to accomplish tasks.
  • Must have ability to push using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
  • Must be able to pull using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in sustained motion.
  • Must be capable of lifting objects up to 50 pounds from a lower to higher position or to move objects horizontally from position to position. Requires substantial use of back and upper extremity muscles.
  • Must withstand substantial movements of the wrist hands and/or fingers.
  • Must be able to distinguish smell, taste, and temperature.
  • Must be able to assist with evacuation of residents.
