Job summary:

Assist in planning, organizing, developing and directing the Nursing Service in accordance with government regulations and as may be directed by the Director of Nursing, to assure that the highest degree of quality patient care can be maintained at all times.

Essential duties and responsibilities: Include the following; other duties may be assigned.

Assist in planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating, and directing the nursing service department, its programs and activities.

Develop and maintain a good working rapport with inter-department personnel, as well as other departments within the facility to assure that the department services and activities can be properly maintained to meet the needs of the patients.

Develop and maintain nursing objectives and standards.

Interpret department policies and procedures to personnel, patients, visitors, family members, etc., as necessary, assuring that all follow the established policies at all times. At least once a year, reviews the policies, recommending any changes.

Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the department.

Meet with department personnel, on a regularly scheduled basis, to assist in indentifying and correcting problem areas, and/or the improvement of services; evaluate your assigned personnel and make recommendations to the department director.

Review patient care plans, treatment plan, etc., at least monthly, and makes recommendations to the department director; order prescribed medications, supplies, and equipment as established by our policies and procedures. Assure that narcotic records are current at all times.

Admit, transfer and discharge patients. Assist in arranging transportation, packing, as necessary; assure that patient is escorted to the discharge/transfer area.

Administer professional services such as: catherization, tube feedings, suction, applying and changing dressings/bandages, packs, colostomy and drainage bags, taking blood, sputum, urine specimens, massage and exercises, care of the dead/dying, etc., as established by our policies and procedures; check patient charts for specific treatment, medication orders, schedules.

Write patient charge slips and submits to the business office or health center billing personnel.

Review physician's orders, transfer/preadmission information, new diet orders/changes for completeness and forward information to appropriate department. Report all discrepancies of physician's orders, diet, charting to the department supervisor.

Carrie out restorative and rehabilitative programs, to include self-help/care.

May perform minor housekeeping duties around the nursing unit.

Notify the attending physician and supervisor/department director when a patient is discharged without approval. Assure that appropriate documentation is made in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Inspect the nursing service areas and practices for compliance with current applicable regulations at least monthly.

Assist physician in Medical Clinic, Hillcrest Assisted Living and Independent Units if needed.

Ability to provide total care for Residents as needed.

Work with the facility's consultants - pharmacy, medical records, social services, as necessary and implement recommended changes as required.

Assist in standardizing the methods in which work will be accomplished.

Assure that the department is maintained in a clean and safe manner for patient comfort and convenience by assuring that necessary equipment and supplies are maintained to perform such duties/services, recommending to the Director of Health Services the equipment and supply needs of the department.

Resident's Rights Responsibilities: Ensure that patient's rights to fair and equitable treatment, self determination, individuality, privacy, property and civil rights, including the right to wage a complaint, are well established and maintained at all times.

Maintain Confidentiality of all pertinent patient care information to assure patient rights are protected.

Review complaints and grievances and make necessary oral/written reports to the Director of Health Services.

 
Position Requirements

Qualifications (Education and/or Experience):

Must possess a valid and current California Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) license and a minimum of six to ten (6-10) year of experience in a hospital, skilled nursing care facility, or other related medical facility. 

 

Training in rehabilitative and restorative nursing practices required.

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:  Must be able to read, write, speak in an understandable manner, and understand the English language and carry out oral and written instructions.  Must be competent with use of computer for documentation purposes including E-Mars & E-Time.

 

Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.

 

Must possess the ability to deal tactfully and work harmoniously with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.

 

Must be a minimum of 23 years of age and of good moral character.

 

Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations and guidelines pertaining to hospital and nursing home operation.

 

Possess leadership ability and the willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise non-professional personnel.

 

Must possess the ability to maintain the care and use of supplies, equipment and maintain the appearance of nursing areas, regular inspection of nursing units for sanitation, safety and proper performance of assigned duties.

 

Possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing nursing practices.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear and see.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and peripheral vision.  The employee must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.  The employee must be able to lift patients, medical supplies.

 

Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability to be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of relating to and working with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset and at times, hostile people within the facility.
