Description

Position Objective: To support the Museum mission by keeping all exhibits in functioning order and completing repairs and maintenance to exhibits in a timely manner. Provide preventative maintenance and cleaning of the exhibits and exhibit environments.

To ensure that museum exhibits are safe and properly maintained with technologies periodically updated, and to assure that our one-of-a-kind exhibit prototypes are engineered and fabricated to both create a desired visitor experience and to resolve pertinent technology issues.

Responsibilities:

  • The Exhibit engineer is the team’s SME on technology driven exhibits. Focuses on troubleshooting, upgrading, maintaining, and installing exhibit technology.
  • Act to perform daily upkeep, maintenance, and cleaning of museum exhibits, for both inside and outside exhibit areas, accomplishing repairs to exhibits as necessary to help ensure that the exhibits continuously deliver safe, reliable and satisfying interaction for our members and other guests.
  • Act to perform opening and closing functions for outdoor and indoor exhibits as assigned. Opening function includes verifying operation of outdoor kiosks and deploying exhibit devices, refreshing materials, consumables, and/or supplies. Closing function includes removal and safe storage of exhibit devices, materials, consumables and/or supplies; and lock-up of exhibits components as required. Both functions include inspecting exhibits for breakage, failure, or malfunctions as the opening or closing is performed.
  • Report exhibit outages and collaborate as required to formulate plans for exhibits repair, and act as necessary to bring exhibits back into operation in a timely basis. Primary objective is to ensure a reliable and satisfying interaction, in terms of maximized operational uptime of exhibits.
  • Responsibilities for material planning /ordering.
  • Assist with installation of pop up exhibits.
  • Develop / Create / Build prototypes with the Exhibits Team.
  • Coordinate Contractor work.
  • Recommend
    • Improvements and/or redesigns for existing exhibits and implement these changes
    • Designs and/or adapts appropriate technologies to fulfill exhibit concepts, and implements these in functioning prototypes.
  • Develop/Contribute
    • Develop technologies and designs for new and existing exhibits
    • Develop and implement exhibit prototypes
  • Flexibility to work weekend shifts and assist with other projects as needed.
 
Position Requirements
  • Ability to independently learn and understand the technology behind one-of-a-kind exhibits. (PC’s, media players, projectors, video cameras & displays, networking, etc.)
  • Proficiency in electronics and computer installation, set-up, troubleshooting, programming.
  • Experience with multimedia / commercial audiovisual equipment (Installation and programming).
  • Knowledge of wood working, painting, plumbing and metalworking principles.
  • Good communication skills
  • Demonstrated success in a
    collaborative work environment.
  • Prior experience in industrial installations or exhibit prototyping.
  • General sciences background
  • Capable of climbing ladders, lifting 50 lbs. and working outdoors in changing weather conditions.
  • Flexibility to work weekend shifts.
  • Able to clear a background check prior to employment.

Desired:

  • Degree in Engineering Technology or related discipline
  • Computer programming and scripting experience.
  • Familiarity with 3D printing
  • Familiarity with CAD
  • Prior non-profit experience
  • Project Management Experience
  • Exhibits Fabrication / Maintenance experience.
 
Shift Days  
Pay Range $22.15/ hr
