Description

SUMMARY:

The primary function of this position as Sewing Machine Mechanic / Maintenance Technician is performing highly diversified duties to install, troubleshoot, repair and maintain production and facility equipment, specifically sewing machine repairs, according to safety, preventive and productive maintenance systems and processes to support the achievement of the site’s business goals and objectives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for repairing industrial sewing machines (brands include: Juki, Adler, Brother, Consew, Pfaff, Singer)
  • Makes repairs to production sewing equipment using skills in the areas of electrical, mechanical and pneumatics.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on production equipment and maintain logs using PMM software
  • Performs routine inspections on machines as needed to maintain the integrity of equipment and insure safe operation
  • Adheres to all safety regulations and rules both internal to the plant, as well as, state and national codes in the performance of daily duties
  • Maintains clean and orderly work area
  • Installs and remove equipment as necessary to support production schedules
  • Uses electrical multi-meters, gauges and test instruments in process of maintaining equipment and troubleshooting problems with machinery and equipment
  • Provides emergency/unscheduled repairs of production equipment during production and performs scheduled maintenance repairs of production equipment during machine service
  • Reads and interprets equipment manuals and work orders to perform required maintenance and service
  • Diagnoses problems, replace or repair parts, test and make adjustments
  • Detects faulty operations, operative material and report those and any unusual situations to proper supervision
  • Supports, communicates, reinforces and defends the mission, values and culture of the organization
  • Adheres to all quality standards
  • Supports other projects and performs duties as assigned

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities

  • May participate in lean/six sigma/quality/safety initiatives as required

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Does not supervise others

Years Experience

  •       1-3 years related experience                       

Level of Education

  • Required High School diploma or GED
  • Preferred  completion of a craft apprenticeship,                           vocational or technical certificate, or an equivalent                       number of years of education and production                         maintenance experience.

  • Ability to work from verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to read measuring devices
  • Ability to read shop drawings
  • Three years’ experience repairing industrial sewing machines is preferred
  • Demonstrates proficiency in mechanic skills including, but not limited to, mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, troubleshooting and repair of production machines
  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  • Flexibility to work adjusted schedules and overtime when required
  • Appropriate PPE usage as dictated by the job
  • Operation of small power tools, other hand tools and computerized and high-pressure equipment
  • Goal oriented and team focused to ensure completion of projects in a timely manner

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job:

  • Work is accomplished in a moderately clean plant environment.
  • The production floor does not have a heating and cooling system.
  • The sound level in the work environment may fluctuate due to noises associated with manufacturing process
  • Regularly exposed to dust, odors, oil and/or fumes

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:

  • Performs all work in accordance with safety and workmanship and good housekeeping specifications
  • Frequent lifting of up to 50 lbs., occasional lifting up to 75 lbs.
  • Ability to climb ladders, bend, kneel, work overhead with arms, and sit or stand for several hours at a time
  • Eye/hand coordination required, with steady and agile hands to operate equipment and tools
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
  • Ability to wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), as required per plant rules

Training

New employee safety orientation and training on special tools or software required for job performance

 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

High School diploma or equivalent and completion of a craft apprenticeship, or an equivalent number of years of education and production maintenance experience; Associates degree in mechanical, electrical or industrial maintenance a plus.

WORK EXPERIENCE:

Five years of industrial maintenance in a manufacturing environment with focus on Preventative Maintenance Management preferred; strong hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, electrical, troubleshooting and repair of production machines; able to operate of small power tools and other hand tool; knowledge and understanding of all OSHA requirements for all equipment; experience with Lean Manufacturing implementation desired; tow motor and crane certification is required;

  • Works independently, is self-motivated and success driven, yet able and willing to take direction
  • Ability to work from verbal and written instructions

  • Possesses strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with vendors and employees/managers at all levels within the company
  • Able to work additional hours as needed
  • Able to meet quality standards of work and complete projects in a timely manner
