Our EMPOWER After School program in Elizabeth City is seeking Recreation Paraprofessionals who are energetic and passionate about supporting children with disabilities and/or behavioral issues. This position will provide (1:1) support on a Modified Full-time schedule Monday - Friday, Scheduled hours: M-F  2:30 to 5:30 throughout the school year. Full-Day Summer Camp.  There will also be weekend commitments up to 2 Saturdays per month for a minimum of 6 hours.  Stipend will be provided for any additional hours & Saturdays.  If you’re looking for a rewarding, challenging position with a sustainable organization then come join our EMPOWER Team WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING: Responsible for working 1:1 with a child having special needs and aggressive behaviors (i.e. biting, kicking, hitting, emotional outburst, pinching, etc.) Willingness to learn how to appropriately care for and support a child 1:1 with sensitive medical needs. Extensive on-site training provided by ESUCP. Appropriately manage participant behavior and guide participant toward more acceptable social interactions. Report any unusual or emergent situations to the Community Director and/or Assistant Director promptly. Observe and listen to participants (in good and bad moments) to learn how they behave, what sounds they make means for them, and determine what their want or need is. Be willing to take direction in the establishment and follow-through of behavior management strategies and/or crisis resolution skills. Implement positive behavior support plans. Model appropriate behavioral interventions Communicate effectively in oral and written form, especially with parents and/or guardians. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with participants, staff and family, and/or guardians.  Work with staff in developing data collection systems, and monitor data collection to ensure the success of the child’s Individual Service Plan. Assists with identifying individual goals by discussing behavioral issues, successes, and needs of the participant with the Community Director and or Assistant Director.  Be able to identify Antecedents and Precursors of challenging behaviors and respond effectively in handling the challenging behavior. Support and teach naturally occurring outcomes for engagement in meaningful activities. Assists individuals we support with inclusion by participating in community events, social programs, and recreational opportunities in the community. Respects the dignity and individuality of each individual and his/her right to confidentiality. Treatment of all participants in a respectful, warm and caring manner. Assists individuals we support with daily needs by providing choices via communication, prompts, and visual supports. Use of Task Analysis to break down activity participation for opportunities for success. Ensures that the safety, health, hygiene, and nutritional needs of the individuals we support are met. Lifts and transfers individuals we support as needed. Administer medication and document medications in accordance with policy.  Maintain Medication Administration certification through EastersealsUCP.  Notify Community Director and/or Assistant Director of any changes in condition. Assists individuals at learning and increasing skills in all areas of independence, this includes, but is not limited to: Self-help skills, independent living skills, accessing community resources, and pursuit of leisure activities, if an individualized plan exists, this document serves as a guide for these supports. Must be willing to be creative and adapt the program to participant’s needs and/or participation levels in either group or individual settings. Completes required paperwork and computer documentation (may vary by location) accurately and as required by the program. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor. Maintains a positive and enthusiastic attitude. Assists in daily and weekly clean-ups of facilities and activities areas including company vehicles. Shows and encourages respect for personal property, program equipment, and facilities. Sets an example for others through cleanliness, punctuality, sharing, sportsmanship, and other appropriate behaviors. Fulfills assigned roles in enforcing safety regulations and emergency procedures. Prepares for and actively participates in program orientation. Participates in all designated in-service trainings and attends all staff meetings as required by Community Director and/or Assistant Director. Follows all program rules and regulations. Assists with other site programs or community events as needed. Level of professionalism with a behavioral background including Recreational Therapy, Registered Behavior Technician, Special Education, Psychology, etc. Must have 2 years of hands-on experience working one-on-one (1:1) supporting children with special needs and aggressive behaviors. Ability to communicate effectively and positively with staff members and participants to provide a safe and healthy environment. Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups, and varied disabilities Ability to appropriately enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures. Physical ability to transfer participants in and out of wheelchairs, push people in wheelchairs, and assist participants with activities of daily living. • Ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to daily program activities. Has an appreciation and respect for the outdoors. Exhibits enthusiasm, creativity, and a sense of humor. Ability to work independently, handle multiple responsibilities, and assigning priority to activities. Ability to manage the goals of multiple individuals and families on a timely basis. Must complete and maintain current Easterseals UCP training curriculum, which includes, but not limited to the following: CPR/First Aid, NCI, Medication Administration, OSHA/BBP training, core competencies, and other training relevant to the position as defined by local program guidelines. Must possess a valid, unrestricted, state-appropriate driver’s license and maintain current vehicle insurance. Must be able to provide own reliable transportation for use in the program, and/or be willing to transport program participants in agency vehicles- e.g. van or mini-bus.
