JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, perform electrical, fire, and life safety inspections for commercial and residential structures with the Town of Jackson and Teton County. Conduct code compliance follow-up inspections to ensure corrective actions have been taken for violations found. Assist contractors and general public with code interpretation and requirements. Perform review on site plans, fire sprinkler plans, fire alarm plans, and construction documents.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The above description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by employees in this position. This is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, responsibilities and qualifications of employees assigned to this job.

Essential Duties:

  • 60% of time: Responsible to conduct electrical and/or fire inspections for new and existing structures in commercial, residential, and industrial premises to insure compliance with town, county, state, and federal codes, standards, and ordinances. Take appropriate action with the issuance of notices and corrective orders based on immediacy of hazard or event. Receives and takes action on public concerns and/or complaints.
  • 20% of time: Prepare correspondence and produce inspection reports so to reflect the findings of performed inspections. Maintains electronic and hardcopy documentation as necessary.
  • 10% of time: Review site plans, fire sprinkler plans, fire alarm plans, and construction documents identifying code compliance. Assist contractors and general public with code interpretation and requirements.
  • 10% of time: Assists with fire and emergency operations when needed.

 

Other Duties:

  • Perform related duties, responsibilities, and special projects as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Basic knowledge of the characteristics and behavior of electricity and fire and prevention principles to insure life safety.
  • Knowledge of national and state codes affecting electrical installation and fire systems installed in commercial, industrial and residential construction
  • Knowledge and ability to apply mathematical concepts and formulae.
  • Working knowledge in plan review procedures, inspection procedures and permit issuance procedures.
  • General knowledge of applicable OSHA requirements.

Skills to:

  • Skill in utilizing problems solving strategies.
  • Ability to write reports with sufficient detail to enable the reader to identify and understand all pertinent facts.
  • Ability to identify nonconforming materials, workmanship or deviations from plans using fire training, electrical meters and testing equipment.
  • Knowledge of current technological capabilities and applications.

Ability to:

  • Enforce codes and regulations in a self-confident, but courteous manner.
  • Apply mathematical concepts and formulae.
  • Effectively communicate complex concepts to a diverse audience.
  • Speak effectively in public.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports, correspondence, and other written materials.

 

 
Position Requirements

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Minimum Education and Experience:

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent GED

AND

  1. Three (3) years work experience in the construction trades in a directly related capacity

OR

  1. Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

 

Job Requirements:

  • Licensed State of Wyoming Journeyman Electrician.
  • Must pass a criminal background check and possess.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, valid Wyoming/Idaho driver’s license with acceptable driving record.

Special Training or Experience:

Must be current or obtain within one year of hire date:

  • Possession of International Code Council or International Association of Electrical Inspectors Electrical Inspection Certification.
  • Possession of Wyoming Fire Inspector certification.
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification.
  • Attend Apparatus Driver Training when offered by Department

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS (including physical and environmental)

Environmental Conditions:

Approximately 40% of this position’s duties are performed within an indoor or a protected environment while 40% are performed out-of-doors and 20% are performed underground on a daily basis. The incumbent may be exposed to adverse weather and/or unfavorable conditions while driving from the primary business location to field locations as well as during inspection activities. Limited exposure to hazards such as fumes, odors, dust, mist, gases, and other potentially hazardous construction site conditions are experienced. A threat of direct or indirect violence/conflict by other individuals is experienced less than 5% of the time on a daily basis.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to conduct activities involving walking 40% of the time, standing 40% of the time, and sitting 20% of the time.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push and/or pull burdens of minimal weight up to 10 lbs.
  • Ability to grasp and manipulate office, measuring and testing equipment and similar other tools and materials.
  • Ability to conduct activities involving climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling/bending, crouching, crawling, twisting, climbing, and reaching are in constant use.
  • Ability to work with hands above shoulder height and with arms extended at shoulder height with up to 5 lbs. is required daily.
  • Ability to participate in routine conversation in person or via telephone and to distinguish telephone, voice and other auditory tones.
  • Ability to distinguish objects in low and bright light using visual capacity including peripheral vision, depth perception, color vision, and far and near acuity in order to observe all elements of a structure or zone and document the results.
  • Ability to use a computer intermittent periods of time.
  • Ability to operate a vehicle.
  • Ability to understand verbal information and instruction. Ability to exchange information with others and to develop and present recommendations.
  • Ability to read and understand written information. Ability to compose information and instruction in written form.
  • Ability to translate verbal communication into effective written material, e.g. reports and other documents.
  • Ability to use mathematical reasoning is necessary to carry out regulations and requirements.
  • Ability to utilize analytical skills and apply results.
  • Ability to use and apply technology.
