Position Description

The Center for Policing Equity (CPE) is looking for a skilled practitioner to serve as a C4J Community Engagement Research Associate.

C4J is a new initiative aimed at providing statistical analyses and strategic guidance to law enforcement agencies (LEAs) in support of their efforts to reduce racial disparities in policing outcomes.

The C4J Community Engagement Research Associate will be responsible for research and information gathering around community, socio-, and political factors within potential C4J cities. This includes identifying community influencers, cultural dynamics, and historical context (especially around policing and reforms) within the given community. Additionally, the individual would support development and implementation of CPE's C4J service delivery model.

The candidate should have a strong research background (e.g., sociology research experience or intelligence-gathering experience) and be able to produce reports that allow the CPE C4J team to have a robust understanding of a particular city's culture and history. It is also necessary that the research associate can support the relationship building efforts required to create partnerships and drive progress forward within the designated cities.

This position reports to the C4J Community Engagement Specialist.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research and vet potential C4J sites, providing C4J colleagues with a detailed understanding of the community and socio-political factors at play within each city(especially as they pertain to law enforcement and policing)
  • Inform the C4J team of any changing factors within the communities within C4J sites including socio-political factors at play
  • Translate research findings to inform C4J activities within sites: provide recommendations, strategy, and change management practices based on evidence-based research and community analysis
  • Act as a subject matter resource in regards to racial equity, policing, and community context within each C4J site
  • Coalition-build with community members and organizations to advance the mission of C4J
  • Assist with research and analysis work for other team members and C4J assessments, as assigned
  • Provide C4J Community Engagement Specialist with recommendations for opportunities to enhance the effectiveness of deliverables and services
  • Coordinate internal resources to ensure effective service with communities and key stakeholders and to facilitate service delivery
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to develop work programs, timelines, and planning documentation

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in sociology or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in research, government, community relations, or related field; experience social-science research / socio-economic impact assessment is preferred
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal), research and data analysis, and technical writing skills
  • Knowledge of complex public service systems and of issues of structural racism and racial discrimination in the US
  • Demonstrated legitimacy with vulnerable communities
  • Ability to use critical thinking to navigate and analytically solve complex problems
  • Ability to plan and prioritize workload and manage multiple assignments at one time
  • Ability to work independently and elicit trust in judgment
  • Knowledge and or experience in data analytics preferred but not required
  • Passionate about social justice issues
