POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is primarily responsible for product design engineering of automotive aftermarket light duty Pick-Up Truck/Jeep accessories, with a focus on new product development for pick-up truck Bed Covers (a.k.a. Tonneau Covers) and related components. This position requires strong knowledge and experience in automotive exterior design (Class A surfaces, injection molding, etc.) and is for the highly creative engineer. Projects will target both aftermarket, including advanced concept engineering, conceptual development, initial design, prototypes (3D printing, functional prototype mock-up development, etc.), proof of concept (including initial DV testing and other evaluation methods), hand-off to production design, etc.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES:

  • Engineering -- Responsible for innovative designs concepts and complete product engineering, including reviewing and establishing performance and material specifications, functional specifications, GD&T, load requirements, and other specifications to meet/exceed customer satisfaction requirements. Collaborates with the Truck Hero Manufacturing Operations team members and supply chain. Evaluates new components for fit, form, and function; and provides direction for engineering changes needed to meet specifications.
  • Design -- Provide direction for innovative and new product design solutions to meet customer requirements. Must be capable of designing in SolidWorks for the intention of and production implementation (using the DFMA toolbox skills i.e. DOE, DFMA etc.). Coordinate design-related workload with designated CAD Designer.
  • Innovation and Concepts – Utilize creative and critical thinking to develop new product concepts that have high customer appeal, function, and/or aesthetics. Apply knowledge of various engineered materials and processes towards new product ideas and concepts.
  • CAE – Ideal candidate has experience using CAE, mainly for linear static analysis but also dynamic analysis. Understands methods used to correlate FEA models to actual test results.
  • DFM – Design for Manufacturing when needed and as required or driven by the brand’s manufacturing engineer(s).
  • DFMEA and DVP&R – Utilizes Truck Hero best practices and develops DFMEAs and DVP&Rs as required for new products.
  • Design Validation -- Coordinate and perform product analysis and design validation (DV) test activities for existing and new products for commercial viability, durability, and functionality.
  • Other Duties as Assigned.
 
Position Requirements

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: Minimum 4-year Bachelor of Science Engineering degree.
  • Experience: Minimum 1-3 years of hands-on, professional automotive product engineering experience working in OEM or Tier 1 body/exterior/sealing/mechanisms or equivalent.

Engineering Skills/Knowledge: Has experience and knowledge in using Solidworks design software and PDM, as well as:

  • Hands on experience in the design, testing and validation of systems.
  • Experience in product design and engineering of injection molded components. Includes an understanding of injection molding tool design principles and limitations (associated to draft angle, backside lifter/slide design, avoidance of class “A” surface issues, gating, texture/grain, etc.) is highly desired for this role. Also, must understand and apply extrusion die principles and limitations for aluminum and extruded plastics and rubber.
  • Candidate will need to apply principles of punching, forming and interlocking of members.
  • Capable of engineering parts and systems in a manner that reflects the forming processes and capabilities of the manufacturing and assembly tooling (Design for Manufacturing, or DFM).
  • Identify, analyze, and implement continuous product design improvement to reduce warranty and improve manufacturing process efficiency, safety, quality, and cost.
  • Candidate will need to interpret and follow design direction with minimal direction needed to complete task and is capable of developing multiple concepts within a short duration.
  • An understanding of kinematic mechanisms and systems involving multi-linked members and latch mechanisms is desirable but not mandated for this position.
  • An understanding of the application of component and system level GD&T is required.
  • Ideal candidate has a working-level understanding of a Phase Gate process, and can work within this style of development structure/process to ensure robust validation is carried out.
  • Experienced in working with OEMs, and a strong understanding of the APQP and PPAP Processes is a “plus” for this position but not mandated.

Additional Requirements:

  • Skilled in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Possess strong problem solving skills. Lead and engage in trouble shooting with the team to develop options for success during complex situations.
  • Work with the customers both internal and external directly as the main interface for the project.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, decision-making, and computer skills
  • Ability to interact with a cross-functional diverse team throughout the organization. Team mind-set, yet hold self personally accountable for team results.
  • Excellent Verbal, Writing, and Presentation skills.
  • Must be a self-motivated, self-starter capable of setting priorities and multi-tasking.
  • Must be able to travel locally (Metro-Detroit) and domestically as required. Travel estimated to be roughly <10% (initially higher due to learning curve).
  • Must be a US Citizen or have a resident Green Card.
