POSITION DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the SVP of Strategic Communications, the Director of Content serves as the lead storyteller, narrative strategist, and content generator for the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health. The incumbent will work closely with executive leaders and colleagues across teams to create polished and impactful narratives for individual and mass audiences. They will also take the lead on generating thought leadership strategy for the organization more broadly. This role will manage a team of content creators.

ROLE DESCRIPTION

  • Design and implement an annual, organization wide omnichannel content strategy, with the goal of developing donor pipelines and generating revenue
  • Partner with the Foundation CEO, Hospital CEO, Medical School Dean, and faculty on messaging, including social media, correspondence, presentations, and thought leadership; ghostwrite high stakes communications
  • Manage colleagues and vendors, directly and indirectly, in service of creating topnotch communications assets that are consistent with our brand and priorities, well-written, and well-designed
  • Partner with the campaigns team to develop messaging and collateral related to campaign priorities
  • Establish and maintain KPIs around content to prioritize topics, themes, and assets
  • Benchmark and serve as consultant to revenue teams around best practices in content strategy among Foundations, in healthcare, and more broadly
  • Source, build and nurture a library of topics and themes
  • Draft the organization’s highest stakes and most sophisticated communications

 

 
Position Requirements

POSITION REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Skills required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 8 years of work experience
  • Experience producing high quality communications and/or marketing outputs in a high stakes environment.
  • Exceptional writing skills with experience working with executives
  • Excellent written, verbal, and visual communication skills
  • Ability to simplify complex topics for a broad audience; experience with healthcare or science preferred
  • Experience in developing holistic content strategies
  • Experience with campaign communications, especially in fundraising and/or sales
  • Experience partnering closely with executive leaders
  • Direct staff, vendor, and team management experience
  • Prefer experience with public relations
  • Experience and/or familiarity with fundraising methods and best practices is a plus

Possesses the patience and confidence to create outputs in an environment characteristic of many feedback cycles, the potential for midstream strategy changes, and restructuring content when near the final draft.

Relationship Builder: Ability to build internal and external relationships, including ability to create and sustain mutually beneficial relationships with people who have a wide range of personality types and diverse cultural backgrounds.

Exceptional written communicator: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate through both logic and emotion. Top-flight storyteller with exceptional copy-editing skills and the ability to quickly learn and implement the voice of others in one’s own writing. Ability to translate complex, technical, wordy content into visualizations and coherent, compelling, and pithy language.

Exceptional capacity to manage visual design: Ability to source and manage visual designers. Possesses knowledge and understanding of best practices of visual design. Ability to manage visual designers to strong outputs, even if not fully an expert in visual design.

Self-Starter with a growth and learning mindset: Entrepreneurial approach to creating a clear road map to successfully manage projects and solve problems while meeting desired outcomes. Seeks feedback to continually improve performance.

Strong Project Manager Who Operates Strategically and Persistently: Ability to plan and manage multiple projects at once including managing the execution and experience of multiple stakeholders. Ability to manage projects with an eye towards version control and asset management.

Integrity: Ability to work with sensitive and confidential information always maintaining the highest level of confidentiality and discretion.

Mission orientation: Possesses a genuine interest in improving the health and well-being of pregnant women and children.
