About the Organization For over 70 years, The Arc Northern Chesapeake Region has helped people with intellectual and developmental disabilities build better lives one person at a time. We provide support services and advocacy to 400 adults and children and their families in Harford and Cecil Counties. The Arc supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to create lives that mirror yours and mine: students attending neighborhood schools, adults going to work and living in their own homes, and individuals enjoying the social and recreational opportunities in their communities. We are a private, non-profit local chapter of The Arc of Maryland and The Arc of The United States, the largest volunteer organization in the world devoted exclusively to improving the quality of life for all adults and children with developmental disabilities.

Description

Position Summary:

The Lead Support Coach is responsible for ensuring that all individuals served are in integrated, dignified and respectful environments and receive necessary supports in order to be active in their chosen environments and communities. The Lead Support Coach will serve as a support to the House Supervisor, this person will also work side by side with DSP's to serve as a mentor.

Position Duties & Responsibilities:

In a manner consistent with supporting The Arc NCR Mission Statement the Lead Support Coach includes but not limited to the following:

Quality Support:

Under the direction of the House Supervisor you will train and mentor Direct Support Professionals on all aspects of their job responsibilities.

If applicable, guide individuals supported in following specific dietary guidelines.

Assist and set the example for individuals supported with understanding good hygiene, appropriate dress and proper social interaction while in their home, out in the community or in work settings.

Assist the House Supervisor with scheduling and transport of people supported to community events, social activities, work sites, medical and other appointments.

Maintain residence and ensure it is a clean and safe environment for the people supported and other staff members.

Assist individuals supported with financial guidance such as budgeting, planning, banking and related documentation.

Enusre that all Health and Safety standards are followed

Assist House Supervisor with medical oversight, to include nursing visits and medical follow ups.

Utalize iCare Manager to track medical appointments and ensure if clearly reflects the most up to date information.

You will be assigned to a minimum of two locations.

Quality Team Members:

Assist in the peer training of new team members in a positive and supportive manner.

Communicate openly with House Supervisor on a matters

Observes, coaches, models and gives feedback to DSP's within the assigned home to ensure best practices are being used to support people in the best possible manner.

Assist the House Supervisor in assigning tasks and services within the home to DSP's. These include basic home maintenance and chores as well as services particular to certain individuals.

Financial Excellence:

Report to work on time to reduce the need for overtime.

Effectively track all time by clocking in and out and transferring departments when needed in the time keeping system

Work with House Supervisor and co-workers to ensure groceries are in the home and cost effective shopping occurs

The DSP promotes the health and wellness of all individuals; administers medication accurately and is in accordance with agency policies and procedures; uses first aid and safety procedures when responding to emergences; assists individuals in scheduling, keeping and following through on all health appointments; assists individual in completing personal care activities; assists with identifying, securing and using needed adaptive equipment and therapies; assists in implementing health and medical treatments; assists individuals in taking an active role in their health care decision.

Organizational Participation

The DSP is familiar with the mission and practices of the organization and participates in the life of the organization; contributes to program evaluations and helps to set organizational prioritizes to ensure quality; incorporates sensitivity to culture, religious, racial, disability, and gender issues into daily interactions; provides and accepts peer support, participates in supportive supervision, performance evaluations, and the screening of potential employees; provides input into budget priorities, identifying ways to provide services in a more cost effective manner.

Documentation

The DSP is aware of the requirements for documentation in the organization and is able to manage these requirements efficiently; maintains accurate records and, if applicable, submits it to appropriate sources in a timely manner; maintains standards of confidentiality and ethical practice; remains current with appropriate documentation systems.

Intermediate Level

Community Living Skills & Supports

The DSP has the ability to match specific supports and interventions to the unique needs of the individual and recognizes the importance of friends, family and community relationships; assists individuals to meet his or her physical and personal management needs by teaching skills, providing experiences, and building strengths and capabilities; assists individual with household management and transportation needs to maximize skills, abilities, and independence; assists with identifying, securing, and using needed equipment and therapies; supports in developing friendship and other relationships.

Community and Service Networking

The DSP should be knowledgeable about the formal and informal activities and supports available in his or her community and skilled in assisting the individuals to identify and gain access to such activities; working with informal support system initiates community connections; researches and maintains information on community and other needs of the individuals; ensures individuals have access to community resources.

Education, Training & Self-Development

The DSP should be able to identify areas for self-improvement, pursue necessary training and educational resources and share knowledge with others; completes all required training, education/certification, and keeps abreast of relevant resources and information; educates individuals, co-workers and community members about issues by providing information and support and facilitating training.

Communication

The DSP should be knowledgeable about the range of effective communication strategies and skills necessary to establish a collaborative relationship with the individual they support; uses effective, sensitive communication skills to build rapport and channels of communication; adapts to the range of the individual's communication style; uses modes of communication that are appropriate to the communication needs of the individual; uses termination appropriately and ensures individual's understanding.

Advocacy

The DSP should be knowledgeable about the diverse challenges facing participants including human rights, legal, administrative and financial; identify and use effective advocacy strategies to overcome such challenges; has current knowledge of laws, services, and community resources to assist and educate individuals to secure such needed resources; represents the participant when there are barriers to his or her services needs and lobbies decision-makers when appropriate to overcome such barriers; interacts and educates community members and organizations when relevant to participants needs or services.

Building and Maintaining Friendships and Relationships

The DSP supports the individuals in the development of friendships and other relationships; assists in planning activities and events, arranging needed transportation to attend; documents community activities and events; assists in the facilitation of friendships and peer interactions; encourages and assists with communication with family and friends; provides incentive and motivation for individual's involvement in community outings; assists with meeting and building relationships with neighbors; encourages personal relationships and dating; assists with communication with social & financial workers.

Participant Empowerment

The DSP enhances the ability of the individuals they support to lead a self-determining life by providing the support and information necessary to build self-esteem, and assertiveness; and to make informed decisions; assist their individuals to develop strategies, make informed choices, follow through on responsibilities and take risks; provides opportunities for their individual to self-advocate by increasing awareness of self-advocacy methods and techniques such speaking on their own behalf and participation in self-advocacy groups; provides information about human, legal, civil rights and other resources that will assist in decision making about living, work and social relationships.

Advanced Level

Crisis Prevention and Intervention

The DSP should be knowledgeable about crisis prevention, intervention and resolution techniques and should match such techniques to particular circumstances and individuals; identifies the crisis, defuses the situation, evaluates and determines an intervention strategy and contacts necessary supports; continues to monitor crisis situations, discussing the incident with authorized staff and individuals, adjusting supports and the environment, and comply with regulations for reporting.

Vocational, Educational & Career Support

The DSP should be knowledgeable about the career and education related concerns of the individuals and should be able to mobilize the resources and experiences necessary to assist them to reach their goals; explores with the individual their vocational interests and aptitudes, assists in preparing for job or school entry, and reviews opportunities for continued career growth; assists individuals in identifying job/training opportunities and marketing their capabilities and services; collaborates with employers and school personnel to support the participant, adapting the environment; and providing job retention supports.

Assessment

The DSP should be knowledgeable about formal and informational assessment practices in order to respond to the needs, desires and interests of the individuals; gathers information and communicates to the individual what to expect throughout the assessment process; conducts and arranges for assessments to determine the needs, preferences, and capabilities of the individual using appropriate assessment tools and strategies; reviews processes for inconsistencies; discusses findings with the individual and follows up on results and reevaluates as necessary.

Facilitation of Services

The DSP is knowledgeable about a range of participatory planning techniques and is skilled in implementing plans in a collaborative and expeditious manner; maintains collaborative professional relationship with the individual's support system including families and friends; follows ethical standards of practice; and recognizes his or her own limitations; develops and implements an individualized plan based on individual's preferences, needs and interests; facilitates the review of the achievement of individual outcomes.

Provide Person Centered Supports

The DSP will provide support to people using a person centered approach-allowing them to live, work and play just like anyone else; modifies support programs and intervention to ensure they are person centered; challenges peers and supervisors to use person centered practices; is knowledgeable about person centered planning and techniques; assists individuals in developing person centered plans.

Education, Training and Experience:

High School Diploma or equivalent is required

Two (2) years' experience in residential setting is preferred

CNA/GNA Certification is required

CPR and First Aid Certifications preferred

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to perform successfully the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable a qualified individual with disabilities to perform essential functions of this position.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties associated with this position, an employee (using approved agency lifting techniques) will be called upon to support and lift adult individuals with developmental and other disabilities; transfer these individuals to and from wheelchairs; to and from beds; on and off toilet seats; in and out of showers; and, in and out of vans or other vehicles. An employee in this position must be able to physically intervene (when appropriate and in an approved manner) to protect the individual from causing harm to themselves or others and to safely evacuate the community residence/van/facility during an emergency. These duties may entail lifting/supporting/transferring up to 60 pounds on one or more occasions during the work shift and occasionally up to 200 pounds with assistance from other staff or devices.

Employees will regularly be required to stand; walk; sit; use hands (or hands and arms) to carry, finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop; crouch and kneel. Employees will also be regularly required to hear (with or without hearing devices), see (with or without corrective lenses) and speak.

Other Requirements

Access to reliable transportation

Active valid driver's license and driving record that has no more than two (2) points.

Maintenance of all required trainings under DDA guidelines and The Arc Northern Chesapeake Region policies and procedures

Flexibility of scheduling to meet agency and program needs

Assist House Supervisors at two locations with the needs of the location

Assist with other administrative duties

Overtime must not exceed 20 hours per 2 week pay period.
