Position Safety Director  

Position Summary:

The Safety Director is responsible for overseeing the safety function for the entire company and job sites. This includes developing and providing appropriate safety training, providing onsite safety inspections and providing feedback on observed behaviors to project managers, supervisors and field staff.

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Develops, implements and maintains all employee and subcontractor training programs.
  2. Establishes and maintains safety and training records.
  3. Conducts inspections and safety audits to ensure the compliance with all environmental, occupational health and safety requirements. Schedules MIOSHA consultations for supervisors. Conducts jobsite reviews with insurance loss control officers.
  4. Develops, updates and manages workplace safety procedures, programs and policies.
  5. Reviews and responds to OSHA safety inspection violation allegations.
  6. Reviews all injuries and investigates the root causes.
  7. Monitors and updates safety licenses for all field staff. Ensures that the most effective safety gear is available as needed.
  8. Writes reports of inspection results and follows up where serious defects are noted.
  9. Coaches field staff in best safety practices and encourages implementation of same.
  10. Listens to all staff member for their input and safety ideas; dialogs through problems to come to proper solutions.
  11. Shares observations from field inspections with senior staff.
  12. Takes progress photos when onsite and shares with marketing department.
  13. Stays aware of the safety rules and regulations of government consisting of the federal, state and local levels; studies them for inclusion into our program. Active member of ABC Safety Committee, and Michigan Safety Conference.
  14. Oversees safety budget for disposable items, reviews new equipment needs, advocates for large safety purchases as needed.
  15. Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received:

Limited Direction: Works from overall policies, goals, and budgetary limits. Virtually self-supervising with direct accountability for final results.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Informal leadership: Determines work assignments, priorities, and procedures for team members. Responsible for assigning, scheduling, and ensuring the quality and quantity of work. May or may not approve time off and schedule adjustments. Provides training and coaching.

Position Requirements

Education & Experience:

  1. Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree specializing in Safety Management or Industrial Hygiene or equivalent work experience preferred.
  2. Construction Health and Safety or Construction Management degree.
  3. Must have OSHA 30 training.
  4. At least 5 years progressive supervision responsibilities in the field.
  5. 3-5 years of experience in Project Management, Estimating or Staff Management.

Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Proficient with Microsoft Office suite and internet research tools.
  2. Dedicated to maintaining safe construction work environments.
  3. Understanding of how buildings are built with practical experience.
  4. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  5. Must be able to actively listen. Requires the ability to keep cool in difficult situations. Must have the ability to develop good relationships with all types of people and gain their trust.
  6. Must be able to provide clear direction where unusual circumstances prevail.
  7. Merge practical knowledge of construction with an understanding of safety regulations to solve issues presented that seem impossible to solve. Creativity and the ability to find unusual solutions is absolutely vital.
  8. Demonstrates the ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and promote a positive working environment.
