Under the direction of the Manager of Fine & Performing Arts, the Music Mentor is responsible for teaching music to children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities at Opportunity Village and in the community. This position will focus on developing and strengthening knowledge of the elements and concepts of music in a fun and creative way. This person will provide direction toward goals of achievement, promote listening and basic motor skills, memory, focus, team work and most importantly, personal self expression through music. Travel in the community will be required for this position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Teach music to children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the community and at Opportunity Village campuses.
  2. Work directly with and report to the Manager of Fine and Performing Arts to ensure the success of all music classes.
  3. Responsible for completing class curriculums, daily attendance, weekly/monthly program updates, monthly newsletter articles, participant progress reports and any additional documentation as requested.
  4. Work independently to create and coordinate class schedules with community special education classrooms.
  5. Teach performance style pieces for Opportunity village and community events throughout the year as assigned.
  6. Work directly with FT Music Mentor and Manager in planning performances and music activities throughout the year.
  7. Act as a stimulating and inspirational force, helping each student grow to fullest capacity as a creative artist.
  8. Create a safe and rewarding environment for all participants.
  9. Maintain an inventory of all assigned equipment and supplies.
  10. Understand and comply with OSHA, infection control, and all OV safety policies and procedures.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Ability to teach and demonstrate musical activities.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, co-workers, and members of the community.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to explain and instruct in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Experience and training in a variety of music fields.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Required: High School Diploma or equivalent and one (1) year verifiable work experience in related field of music/performing arts.
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance or Music Education.
  • Preferred: Experience working with individuals with disabilities.
