The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures advances the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

Reporting to the COO and General Counsel, the Rights Specialist will assist with clearance matters related to intellectual property issues, personal rights, and statutory law. Under the supervision of the Legal Department and the Academy’s outside clearance attorneys and professionals, you will be the primary Academy Museum staff to negotiate and obtain clearances for Academy Museum content.

You Will:

  • Assist in obtaining licenses as needed and ongoing management of licenses obtained. Work with photo library subscription services and functions as the liaison between company and the subscription services.
  • Secure synch and master use licenses for musical compositions and recordings. Work with music library subscription services and functions as the liaison between company and the subscription services.
  • Obtain and process personal releases.
  • Research Rights ownership and details AM responsibility to Talent.
  • Negotiate “promotional usage” for Retail with Studio Marketing and Consumer Products Departments.
  • Consult with Academy’s outside clearance attorneys and clearance professionals as needed to assure best practices.
  • Monitor and manage clearance expirations and communicating expiration dates to the appropriate Academy personnel. Report status of Existing Clearances and Pending Clearances monthly.
  • Review, manage, and maintain production clearance binder.
  • Ensure compliance with all blanket music licensing entities (ASCAP, BMI and SESAC) by working with appropriate Academy personnel and outside clearance professionals on music use and reporting.
 
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • A bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • 3+ years of relevant clearance experience in the entertainment industry.
  • A self-starter attitude with strong negation skills.
  • Working knowledge of intellectual property and related laws.
  • Demonstrable interpersonal and written communications.
  • A high level of integrity and confidentiality.
  • Experience with computers, preferably MS Office Suite and Windows.
  • Attention to detail; excellent follow-through and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently, juggle priorities and manage time to effectively meet deadlines.
  • A creative and resourceful mindset when solving problems.

  • Ability to anticipate needs and act upon requests independently.
